Thrawn, whose Chiss name was Mitth'raw'nuruodo, was a Chiss military commander who rose from the Chiss Ascendancy of the Unknown Regions to become a Grand Admiral of the Galactic Empire. He was renowned for studying the art, history, and culture of his enemies in order to anticipate and defeat them. Commanding the Star Destroyer Chimaera, he hunted the rebels of Lothal during the Galactic Civil War until a pod of purrgil summoned by Ezra Bridger carried him into exile in a distant galaxy.
Origins in the Chiss Ascendancy#
Thrawn was born around 59 BBY on the world of Rentor and raised within the secretive Chiss Ascendancy, deep in the Unknown Regions. As a Chiss he had blue skin and red eyes. In school he was taught the official account that the Chiss capital of Csilla, which had slowly frozen over as its sun dimmed, still held billions of citizens underground, when in truth most of the population had relocated to other worlds.
He attended an academy on Rentor, where his exceptional grades and his standing as a line leader drew the attention of several Ruling Families. Mitth'oor'akiord, Patriarch of the Mitth family, took him on as a merit adoptive, and the young officer entered the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet. At the Taharim Academy on Naporar he scored higher on an examination than anyone in the academy's history, an achievement so improbable that he was suspected of cheating until a combat exercise confirmed the stealth maneuver he had invented. He graduated with a lieutenant's commission and went on to confront threats to the Ascendancy such as the Nikardun Destiny led by General Yiv.
Entry into Imperial service#
Thrawn had a fateful encounter with the Galactic Empire when the Venator-class Star Destroyer Strikefast, commanded by Captain Voss Parck, arrived at the world where he was encamped while searching for smugglers. Parck and the cadet Eli Vanto, who was fluent in the trade language Sy Bisti, examined his camp under Imperial protocols governing first contact with unknown species. Vanto, raised near the Wild Space world of Lysatra, would become Thrawn's translator and aide as he entered Imperial ranks.
Because his blue skin and red eyes made it impossible to disguise himself among human troops, Thrawn relied on cunning rather than concealment. In one operation he used explosives through the night to lure stormtroopers into a forest so that he could study their armor and tactics. He rose steadily through the Imperial Navy, promoted in time by Grand Moff Tarkin, and eventually attained the rank of Grand Admiral.
Methods and the Lothal campaign#
Thrawn's defining method was the study of his enemies. He held that by understanding an opponent's art, history, and culture he could predict and defeat them, an approach he applied against the Free Ryloth Movement led by Cham Syndulla, taking a genuine interest in Twi'lek culture that other Imperial commanders ignored. He declared that he would pull the rebels apart piece by piece and make them the architects of their own destruction.
Commanding the Seventh Fleet from the Star Destroyer Chimaera, Thrawn led the Imperial effort against the rebels of Lothal. He worked alongside Governor Arihnda Pryce, ISB agent Alexsandr Kallus, and other officers, employing infiltrator droids, surveillance teams, and a personal guard of death troopers. He oversaw the development of the TIE Defender starfighter program on Lothal and tested its prototypes against the rebel cell known as the Spectres, which included Ezra Bridger and Hera Syndulla. When the Mandalorian uprising of Clan Wren overthrew Governor Gar Saxon, Thrawn instructed Saxon's successor Tiber Saxon to crush the revolt.
Sometime during the Imperial era he sent his subordinate Captain Gilad Pellaeon to recruit the Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth, testing her in combat against his Noghri assassin Rukh before revealing himself. Recognizing the power in her Nightsister heritage, Thrawn offered her protection in exchange for her loyalty.
Downfall over Lothal and exile on Peridea#
Thrawn's campaign collapsed during the liberation of Lothal. As the rebels seized the Imperial complex in the capital, Ezra Bridger summoned a pod of purrgil, the great space-faring creatures, which wrapped their tentacles around the Chimaera and smashed through its viewports. Though Thrawn wounded Bridger, the young Jedi Force-pushed him into the creatures' grip, and the purrgil carried the Chimaera, with both Thrawn and Bridger aboard, into hyperspace.
Unknown to most of the galaxy, Thrawn survived. The purrgil deposited the Chimaera on the extragalactic world of Peridea, at the far end of their migration route, where the battered Star Destroyer was stranded. Thrawn and Bridger eventually parted ways, and the Grand Admiral set about rebuilding his ship and waiting for rescue.
The return of the Grand Admiral#
Around 9 ABY, the Great Mothers of Peridea used their magick to contact Morgan Elsbeth and lure her to the distant world so that she could bring Thrawn home. Elsbeth constructed a supermassive hyperspace ring known as the Eye of Sion from the salvaged hyperdrive cores of Super Star Destroyers, powerful enough to cross the void between galaxies, and dispatched it with the help of the mercenaries Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati.
The former Jedi Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren pursued, seeking Ezra Bridger and hoping to prevent Thrawn's return. As they closed in on Peridea, Thrawn ordered a delaying action and reluctantly left Elsbeth behind to hold off the Jedi, telling her that he would never again underestimate his enemies as he had seen other Imperial officers do. He boarded the Eye of Sion, docked it with the Chimaera, and made his escape, leaving the galaxy to face the resurgence of a commander whose name the scattered Imperial remnants had long awaited.
