Terran technology
the middle road of the Koprulu Sector
Terran technology was the engineering of humanity in the Koprulu Sector, a paradoxical middle road that advanced through constant conflict and gave the terrans adaptable armies, FTL transmission and sensors, and an ever-growing arsenal of weapons and vehicles.
Terran technology was the body of engineering and science wielded by the terrans, the humans of the Koprulu Sector descended from the survivors of a failed colonization mission from Earth. Something of a paradox on the galactic scale, it was inferior to the work of the protoss yet seemingly more advanced than that of many other species, and it had improved steadily not in spite of humanity's near-constant warfare but because of it.
A paradoxical middle road#
On the galactic scale the terrans were a "middle of the road" species and something of a technological paradox. They were significantly inferior to the likes of the protoss, yet seemingly more advanced than other sapients. From an outsider's point of view, humanity had paradoxically improved its technology despite being in an apparently constant state of conflict. From an insider's point of view, that very conflict was the cause of the improvement rather than an obstacle to it. The terrans were an ingenious and industrious people for whom results mattered more than honor, and that disposition shaped the technology they built.
Arms, vehicles, and the engine of war#
The terrans had a vast assortment of weapons and vehicles at their disposal and were always trying to create more powerful ones. Their armies possessed both adaptability and resilience, qualities that let them endure the harsh circumstances humanity so often faced. Terran weaponry was generally ballistic, with directed-energy weapons such as lasers reserved for high-technology units like the battlecruiser. The aesthetic of terran machinery was clunky, welded, bulky, and hard-edged, rooted in an industrial and military tradition rather than in clean or exotic science.
Terrans greatly developed their engineering abilities after the Brood War, with several later designs becoming sleeker and more advanced than their forebears as humanity's capabilities grew between the two great conflicts.
Sensors, signals, and supply#
Terran technology included faster-than-light transmission and sensor technology, allowing communication and detection across the distances of the Koprulu Sector. Fare gauges, terrain mappers, and targeting systems were standard equipment for terran fightercraft. The maintenance of supply lines was vital in terran warfare, and the cohesiveness of terran military units made them a force to be reckoned with despite humanity's physical inferiority to the zerg and protoss.
Medicine and the body#
Advances in terran medical technology removed many of the ailments that had plagued humanity during its development. Cybernetic implants and advanced surgeries allowed quick recovery from injuries that would once have been permanent or fatal, and terrans made frequent use of medical nanomachines to heal wounds on the battlefield and in civilian infirmaries. Retinor eliminated the need for corrective eyewear, gene therapy and augmentic surgery could alter appearance, and cosmetic surgery was widespread among the wealthy. Even so, illnesses such as cancer still afflicted humanity, some cancers remaining inoperable.
Limits and incompatibilities#
For all their adaptability, the terrans had yet to crack quantum computing, a frontier still beyond their reach. Their technology was also fundamentally incompatible with zerg biology, a divide that left the Swarm unable to hack Dominion networks directly. Within those limits, though, terran ingenuity continued to produce new weapons and machines, the technology forever pushed forward by the conflicts that defined human life in the Koprulu Sector.

The Brood War was a zerg civil war between Sarah Kerrigan and the cerebrate Daggoth over the succession of the Overmind, fought against the backdrop of an invasion by the United Earth Directorate. It ended with Kerrigan supreme over the Koprulu Sector and the Directorate destroyed.
Terran
The terrans are the descendants of a failed 23rd century colony mission from Earth, a young and highly factionalized species with latent psionic potential. Despite endless wars among themselves and with their alien neighbors, they stand as one of the three dominant species of the galaxy.
Koprulu Sector
The Koprulu sector was a remote region of space on the galactic fringe, settled by exiled humans and once spanned by the Protoss Empire. It became the battleground of the terrans, protoss, and zerg across the Great War, the Brood War, and beyond.
Protoss
The protoss are an ancient, psionically gifted humanoid species native to Aiur, uplifted by the xel'naga and bound together by the Khala. Among the three dominant species of the galaxy, they are the most technologically advanced, and the most divided by their own history.
Zerg
The zerg are a ravenous collective of biologically advanced aliens who evolve by assimilating the essence of other species in pursuit of genetic perfection. Created by Amon's xel'naga on Zerus and bound to the Overmind, they grew into one of the three dominant powers of the galaxy.
Adjutant
Adjutants were the non-sapient artificial intelligences that served terran commanders across the Koprulu sector as advisers, navigators, and keepers of data. Humanoid in form but bereft of social grace, they descended from the original ATLAS coding and offered commanders an ever-present strategic eye over the field of battle.
