Giana O'Neill survived the Fall of the Twelve Colonies by winning a lottery drawing staged on Caprica by Lieutenant Valerii and Lieutenant Agathon, which determined who among the desperate survivors would be carried to safety. She was brought to Colonial One aboard Raptor 312, asking after her husband. Drawing on her experience as an aeronautical engineer at Sun Airways, she enlisted in the Colonial Fleet as a deck hand, helping to replace the deck personnel lost during the Fall.
