Design and capabilities#
The Mineral Ship was a faster-than-light capable mining cruiser configured to draw raw metals directly from planetary bodies, allowing the rapid recovery of resources without the labor of building a fixed mining settlement. According to the Galactica Technical Manual, a vessel of the type carried a standard crew of 150 and accommodated 200 passengers, with a cargo capacity of 75,000 metric tons. The ships mounted neither armament nor defenses, relying on escorts and the wider fleet for protection.
Service with the fleet#
During the journey toward Earth, at least a few Mineral Ships were used to mine planets encountered along the way. Within the fleet, the vessels were first deployed to Carillon, a mineral-rich planet on the edge of the Colonial star system, and were subsequently used many times to gather the raw materials needed to create tools and equipment for a variety of roles.
