Ekimu the Mask Maker

Ekimu is the Mask Maker of OkotoOkotoOkoto is a world whose known inhabitants include the Toa, the Mask makers, and the Protectors. in the 2015 BIONICLE reboot, a separate continuity from the original 2001 to 2010 story. With his brother MakutaMakuta (2015)Ekimu's brother and rival Mask Maker, who forged the forbidden Mask of Ultimate Power and was sealed in the Shadow Realm with Capital City. he made Masks of Power for the island's people, and he wears the Mask of Creation and wields the Hammer of PowerHammer of PowerThe Hammer of Power is a weapon wielded by Ekimu, capable of creating as well as melee and ranged combat. The brothers and the broken law#

The two brothers made masks together and also led the island's defence against the Skull Raiders. Over time Ekimu's masks came to be favoured over Makuta's, and Makuta grew jealous. (BIONICLE 2: Battle of the Mask Makers)

At a Festival of Masks, Ekimu presented the Protectors with new masks powered by Elemental Crystals from the Elemental Creatures. Makuta answered with masks that combined two elements, which broke a sacred law, and when they proved dangerous Ekimu rebuked him. (BIONICLE 2: Battle of the Mask Makers)

Then the Elemental Creatures appeared to Ekimu. Taking it as an omen, he flew with the Protectors in his airship to the Temple of Time, used the Mask of Time to look into the future, and saw both the coming cataclysm and the arrival of the Toa. The confrontation at Capital City#

Makuta apologised and claimed to have destroyed his two-element masks, and Ekimu forgave him. But while making the Golden Masks, Ekimu found his crystals gone and a mould left behind: Makuta had melted down his masks and stolen the crystals to make the Mask of Ultimate Power. Ekimu and the Protectors went after him to Capital City. (BIONICLE 2: Battle of the Mask Makers)

When Makuta put the mask on, it took control of him and the island began to fall apart. Ekimu attacked his brother, weeping, and knocked the mask off. The shockwave put both Mask Makers into a deep sleep and scattered the Mask of Creation and the Golden Masks across Okoto. (BIONICLE 2: Battle of the Mask Makers)

The Protectors found Ekimu's body and heard the Prophecy of Heroes whispered from it. They laid him in a sarcophagus and gave him a new mask until the Mask of Creation could be returned to him. (BIONICLE 2: Battle of the Mask Makers)

The awakening#

Thousands of years later, the six ToaThe Toa of Okoto: The Six Heroes Summoned to Save the IslandThe six elemental heroes summoned by the Protectors of Okoto, who recovered the Golden Masks, woke Ekimu, fought the Skull Army, and twice banished Makuta to the Shadow Realm. reached his tomb in the City of the Mask Makers, and his voice told them to combine their elemental powers to wake him. When he jumped out of the sarcophagus he nearly fell, weak from his long sleep, and Onua held him up. He told the Toa off for being late. (LEGO BIONICLE: Island of Lost Masks)

KultaKultaKulta was the leader of the Skull Creatures, a group native to the island of Okoto, and operated from the City of the Mask Makers. Armed with a Mask Stealer Staff and Hook Blade, he possessed the ability to drain masks of their Elemental Powers and once held both the powerless Skull Mask and the Mask of Creation. had already taken the Mask of Creation to destroy it in the Mask Makers' forge. Inside, Kulta put the mask on himself and struck down the Toa. Ekimu had them hold Kulta off while he remade his Hammer of Power, which restored his strength, and with it he knocked the Mask of Creation from Kulta's face and reclaimed it. He then reforged the Toa's broken Golden Masks. The present-day Protectors arrived and bowed to him, and for a moment he mistook them for his friends of long ago. (LEGO BIONICLE: Revenge of the Skull Spiders)

Tools and powers#

Ekimu's tool is the Hammer of Power, which he uses both for making masks and for fighting, and he carries a saw shield. (Ekimu the Mask Maker)

The Mask of Creation helps him in his work, and combined with the Elemental Masks it can bring things into being that he couldn't make alone. Besides masks, he makes armour and weapons; he made the ancient Protectors' armour. (LEGO BIONICLE: Revenge of the Skull Spiders)

When the Okotans' children were taken to the Skull Raiders' underground city, Ekimu agreed to a duel with Kulta in which neither would use his own weapon. He bent the rules by borrowing Onua's earthquake hammer, beat Kulta a third time, and brought the city down. He can read and speak the Skull Raiders' language. The UmarakUmarakUmarak hunted the Elemental Creatures of Okoto until the Mask of Control bound him to Makuta's will and remade him as the Destroyer. campaign#

In The Journey to One, Ekimu crafts new armour and weapons for the Toa and sends them to find the Elemental Creatures and the Mask of Control. (LEGO BIONICLE: The Journey to One)

While the Toa and the creatures defend the city from the Shadow Horde, Ekimu reveals that his forge stands on the ancient Temple of Light. He summons Agil, Creature of Light, enters a chamber in the temple and emerges taller, in new armour, as a Toa of Light, though he disclaims the title. (LEGO BIONICLE: The Journey to One)

At Umarak's mountain, the Toa fall under his shadow power until Ekimu and Agil combine their strength in a blast of light, which weakens Umarak and frees the Toa but returns Ekimu to his normal form. Ekimu knows the blast will also let Umarak complete the ritual to free Makuta. Gali, escaping the Shadow Realm, tells the Toa what Ekimu's own code wouldn't let him say: they must unite their powers to banish Makuta. He watches them do it. (LEGO BIONICLE: The Journey to One)

Legacy#
