The three variants#

Three distinct Elemental BeastsElemental BeastsThree variants of humanoid beast, each grown from a single mutated Shadow Trap by Umarak the Destroyer to occupy the Toa of Okoto. were raised across the campaign. The reforming mask#

The single most operationally important feature of the Elemental BeastsElemental BeastsThree variants of humanoid beast, each grown from a single mutated Shadow Trap by Umarak the Destroyer to occupy the Toa of Okoto. was the crystalline mask each one wore. When a Beast's body was destroyed in combat, the body could be reconstituted around the mask, restoring the unit to the field. The only durable defeat for an Elemental Beast was the destruction of the mask itself. Breaking the body merely interrupted the Beast; breaking the mask ended it.

That mechanic shaped the engagement during the siege phase. A defender who battered down a Beast without finishing the mask was facing the same Beast again as soon as the elemental matter around the mask had reconstituted. The army was designed for a war of persistence rather than a war of single decisive blows, and a handful of Beasts could pin a defending force in place indefinitely if the defenders had no way of finding and shattering the mask under the rebuilding body. That, combined with the Beasts' distortion of the Creatures the defenders most relied on, made the army a strategic tool that tied up the surface defence of OkotoOkotoOkoto is a world whose known inhabitants include the Toa, the Mask makers, and the Protectors. for long enough that the Destroyer could collect his master's mask in peace.

Frequently asked questions

What were the Elemental Beasts in BIONICLE?
The Elemental Beasts were armies of humanoid-beast units raised by Umarak the Destroyer on the island of Okoto using the dark power Makuta had granted him after the donning of the Mask of Control. Three variants existed, one for each element the Destroyer drew on: the Lava Beast for Fire, the Storm Beast for Water, and the Quake Beast for Earth. Their operational purpose was to distract the Toa and the Okotans while the Destroyer collected the scattered fragments of Makuta's Mask of Ultimate Power.
How did Umarak raise the Elemental Beasts?
Umarak had no capacity to raise an army until he was forced to don the Mask of Control and was transformed into the Destroyer, channelled through Makuta. With that dark power he mutated Shadow Traps of the Fire, Water, and Earth elements together with raw matter from the surrounding terrain to form the three Beast variants, giving them a double parentage of the Traps' shadow alignment and the elemental character of their environment.
Why were the Elemental Beasts so hard to defeat?
Each Beast wore a crystalline mask, and if its body was destroyed in combat the body could be reconstituted around the mask, restoring the unit to the field. The only durable defeat was destroying the mask itself. The army was designed for a war of persistence, so a handful of Beasts could pin a defending force in place indefinitely if the defenders had no way of finding and shattering the mask under the rebuilding body.
What happened at the siege of the Ancient City?
The Shadow Horde laid waste to a settlement in the Jungle region and drove on the Ancient City, the seat of the Mask Makers. Ekimu, infused with the power of Light, called the Toa to break off from the city's defence and pursue the Destroyer, leaving the holding action to the Elemental Creatures and the Okotans. The six Creatures and the Okotan defenders held the line for the remainder of the campaign, denying the Beasts the prize they had been raised to seize.
What happened to the Elemental Beasts in the end?
The fate of the Beasts followed the fate of the Destroyer. With Umarak destroyed at the Black Volcano and Makuta sealed back inside the Shadow Realm by the Toa's sacrifice of their elemental power, the dark source from which the Beasts had been raised was cut off. The remaining Beasts were recorded as inhabitants of the Shadow Realm alongside surviving Skull Warriors, Skull Spiders, and shadowy figures resembling Okotans.
