The last festival and the cataclysm#

At the Festival of Masks, Ekimu and Makuta welcomed the ancient Protectors and the Okotans to the city. Ekimu showed the Protectors his forge and gave them new elemental masks. Abandonment and Skull occupation#

Over time, villains drawn to the evil they could feel there moved in. After the Toa found their Golden Masks, Ekimu sent them visions of the city. Inside, the Toa were trapped in a courtyard and attacked by Skull Warriors. LewaLewa, Master of Jungle: The Daredevil Toa of OkotoLewa of Okoto was the Master of Jungle summoned by the Protectors, the rebellious flier who quested for the Mask of Jungle in the Region of Jungle and bonded with Uxar in the second wave. broke away to explore the arena and lost his mask to the Skull Slicer; the others got it back, but brought the arena down on themselves. Meanwhile Kulta stole the Mask of CreationThe Mask of CreationThe signature Kanohi of Ekimu the Mask Maker, the source of his creative craft. Stolen by Kulta the Skull Grinder, reclaimed at the Mask Makers' forge, and worn again in the final defence of Okoto. from Ekimu's tomb and took it to the Great Forge to melt it down. The Toa tunnelled out into the graveyard, fought the Skull Scorpios, and used their elemental powers to wake Ekimu in his tomb. Together they rushed to the Great Forge, where Ekimu defeated Kulta and freed the city. (BIONICLE Webisodes)

While the Toa fought above, the Protectors came in from below, guided by an alternate route the archaeologist HarvaliHarvali, the Jungle Archaeologist of OkotoHarvali was the Region of Jungle archaeologist whose disappearance beneath the City of the Mask Makers preceded the second age of Okoto, and whose rescue by the Protectors during the campaign against the Skull Spiders unblocked the bridge that brought the villagers back to the capital. had shown the Protector of Jungle. The city as the capital#

The Protectors built a rope bridge to replace the ruined one and welcomed the Okotans to their new home. Rebuilding turned up old records that they hoped would teach them about their ancestors. (BIONICLE: Revenge of the Skull Spiders; BIONICLE: Battle of the Mask Makers)

Ekimu gave the Toa new armour and masks there, and the city became their base. From it they set out to find the Golden Masks of Unity and later the Labyrinth of Control. When UmarakUmarakUmarak hunted the Elemental Creatures of Okoto until the Mask of Control bound him to Makuta's will and remade him as the Destroyer. sent the Shadow Horde against the city to distract them, the Toa fought to defend it until Ekimu called them away to stop Makuta's return, leaving the Elemental Creatures and the Okotans to hold it.
