The Mask-Snatching Pincer Pack of Kulta's Army

The scorpion-form units created by Kulta the Skull Grinder, sent in packs to ambush the Toa in a Skull Graveyard and strip Pohatu of his Golden Mask of Stone.

Pincers, blades, and the mask-snatch attack#

The Skull Scorpio's combat kit was built around two distinct weapon systems. The Gripping Pincers were the heavy primary tool, a large set of articulated claws designed to immobilise an enemy at close range and, in the same motion, snatch the mask from the opponent's face. The mask-snatch function was the operational point of the weapon. A Scorpio that closed to grip range against a Toa was not trying to crush or to kill outright. It was trying to strip the Toa of his elemental Golden MaskThe Six Golden Masks of Power of OkotoThe ultimate elemental Kanohi of Okoto, forged by Ekimu from sacred Elemental Crystals, hidden in shrines across the island, and worn by the Toa as the proof and the instrument of the Prophecy of Heroes., since the species could then drain the mask's stored elemental power and convert the Toa's chief asset into fuel for the attacking pack.

The secondary weapon set was the dual Stinger and Hook BladesHook BladesCurved, hooked weapons wielded by Skull Slicer for slashing and catching, with a variant also carried by Kulta., venomous paired blades carried alongside the Pincers. The blades were built for speed and precision rather than mass, capable of striking with what the surviving accounts call lightning speed, and they served the same role that an Ice SpearIce Spear (Kopaka)Kopaka's ice-infused melee weapon in the 2015 BIONICLE reboot, balancing reach with cold-element dominance. served for the Skull WarriorsSkull WarriorsThe undead ice-armed footsoldiers raised from the giant skeletons buried beneath the City of the Mask Makers, deployed by Kulta the Skull Grinder as the numerical backbone of his assault on the abandoned capital of Okoto.: a fast melee weapon for any engagement at which the heavier primary tool could not be brought to bear. The combination of Pincers and Blades let a single Scorpio operate as both a grapple-and-strip specialist and a fast skirmisher, and the species' pack tactics built on that flexibility.

A Scorpio that snatched a mask did not merely deprive the Toa of an object. It opened a transfer of elemental power from the captured mask back to the Scorpio itself, the same parasite function the Skull WarriorsSkull WarriorsThe undead ice-armed footsoldiers raised from the giant skeletons buried beneath the City of the Mask Makers, deployed by Kulta the Skull Grinder as the numerical backbone of his assault on the abandoned capital of Okoto. used against Golden Masks and the same function KultaKultaKulta was the leader of the Skull Creatures, a group native to the island of Okoto, and operated from the City of the Mask Makers. Pack hunting in the Skull Graveyards#

Skull Scorpios did not fight alone. They hunted in small packs, and the recorded behaviour of those packs included a patience that was unusual for a unit of their size. A Scorpio pack would wait in ambush for days on end for its prey if necessary, taking up position in the Skull Graveyards and the rocky country around the City of the Mask MakersCapital CityThe former main city of Okoto, drawn into the Shadow Realm by the destruction of the Mask of Ultimate Power, leaving the Black Crater on the surface and a ruined court for Makuta in the dark below. and holding station until the chosen target moved within strike range. That doctrine matched the species' build. The Stinger and Hook BladesHook BladesCurved, hooked weapons wielded by Skull Slicer for slashing and catching, with a variant also carried by Kulta. rewarded a fast first strike from a settled position, and the Pincers required a close engagement against a target whose attention was already committed elsewhere.

The Skull Graveyard environment was the species' home ground. It was a stone-tribe burial terrain marked by upright skeletal remains and broken ground, conditions in which a low scorpion-form unit could approach a target without being seen and could break line of sight against a pursuing enemy almost at will. The Scorpios that took up station inside the graveyards were operating in terrain that favoured them and disadvantaged any non-Stone Toa who entered it, which explained why a single pack could plausibly take down five of the six ToaThe Toa of Okoto: The Six Heroes Summoned to Save the IslandThe six elemental heroes summoned by the Protectors of Okoto, who recovered the Golden Masks, woke Ekimu, fought the Skull Army, and twice banished Makuta to the Shadow Realm. in a single engagement and emerge with PohatuPohatuPohatu was the Toa Mata and Toa Nuva of Stone, guardian of Po-Wahi, whose speed and steady humour anchored the team through every era of the Matoran Universe.'s mask in hand.
