The Obsidian Province of Okoto

The western elemental region of Okoto, home of the Earth Tribe and the Protector Korgot, a country of treacherous ravines, obsidian fields, and underground tunnels, and the territory through which Onua hunted for the Golden Mask of Earth.

Terrain and underground country#

The Region of Earth occupied the western section of OkotoOkotoOkoto is a world whose known inhabitants include the Toa, the Mask makers, and the Protectors. and presented two distinct landscapes layered atop one another. The surface was a black, glasslike country, often described as nightmarish by those who travelled it, broken by treacherous ravines, deep crevices, and rifts that opened without warning across the obsidian fields that gave the region its visual character. The obsidian itself, formed in fields of varying density across the surface, supplied the region's most recognisable feature and the raw material on which much of its built fabric depended.

Beneath the surface ran a complex series of tunnels and caverns that extended across most of the region's footprint. The underground network was not a single system but a layered web of natural caves, worked passages, and ancient chambers, the deeper portions of which had been carved or expanded by generations of Earth VillagersEarth VillagersThe villager tribe of the Region of Earth on Okoto, the underground population of the obsidian fields and cavern country under the Protector Korgot, the descendants of Etoku who endured the Skull Spider menace and guided Onua to the Golden Mask of Earth.. It was within that network that the tribe made its settlements, and the underground habitation gave the region a quieter surface than any of OkotoOkotoOkoto is a world whose known inhabitants include the Toa, the Mask makers, and the Protectors.'s other elemental regions: the villages were not visible to a traveller crossing the obsidian above, and a stranger to the region could pass over an inhabited cavern without any sign that the country beneath was peopled.

The region bordered the Region of StoneRegion of StoneThe northwestern desert region of Okoto, home of the Stone Tribe and the Protector of Stone, site of the Battle of the Mask Makers and the Black Crater, and the territory through which Pohatu hunted for the Golden Mask of Stone. along its desert margins and ran westward to the coast. The obsidian fields and the ravines they punctuated made surface travel slow and dangerous to anyone without local knowledge, and the underground routes that the Earth VillagersEarth VillagersThe villager tribe of the Region of Earth on Okoto, the underground population of the obsidian fields and cavern country under the Protector Korgot, the descendants of Etoku who endured the Skull Spider menace and guided Onua to the Golden Mask of Earth. used in preference required a guide. The combination of glasslike rock and unstable ground meant that even short journeys were planned around known crossings, and the region's reputation in the rest of OkotoOkotoOkoto is a world whose known inhabitants include the Toa, the Mask makers, and the Protectors. was one of beauty and hazard in equal measure.

The villagers themselves maintained the regional economy through mining, stone working, and the obsidian trade with the other regions. The underground orientation of the tribe shaped its working life: most labour was performed below the surface in the cavern systems, and the villages had developed the tunnelling expertise and night-adapted senses that long generations of underground habitation produced.

The region's combined geography of obsidian fields above and tunnel networks below offered the spider populations an abundance of cover, and the brood spread into both layers. The surface ravines provided ambush points along the major crossings, and the deeper tunnels supplied nesting grounds that the villages could not easily clear.
