According to the BIONICLE.com story, a number of mythical beings were born with Okoto millennia ago as the island came into existence. Made from the elements that make up the world, the six Creatures embody the island's very soul and life force, and each has made one of Okoto's regions its home since time immemorial. The Creatures took a hand in Okoto's history once before. During the Festival of Masks, while Ekimu was showing the Protectors his newest masks, all six Creatures appeared together in the air above the city. Every Creature tested its Toa. Tahu tried to control Ikir, Kopaka faced off with Melum in the cold, Lewa raced Uxar, and Pohatu tried to tame Ketar by force. One by one the Toa learned they had to treat their Creatures as equals, and the Creatures led them to their temples, where each found a Golden Mask of Unity. Wearing those masks, the Toa united with their Creatures and saw the location of the Labyrinth of Control. Role in the Mask of Control quest#

On the way to the Labyrinth, Umarak attacked from ambush, and while the other Toa shielded their Creatures, Pohatu left Ketar behind. Umarak noted it. He had already told Makuta he would find the weakest link and exploit it. At the island most of the Toa united with their Creatures and raced across, and it was Onua who helped the abandoned Ketar over. (LEGO Bionicle: The Journey to One, "Trials of the Toa")

At the heart of the maze, five Toa united and went through their doors. Before Pohatu could unite with Ketar, Umarak struck, forced Ketar to unite with him and went down after the others. Pohatu chased him. Ketar forced Umarak to break their union and the mask was knocked away, but Umarak dropped Ketar off a cliff. Pohatu chose to save Ketar, and Umarak got away with the mask. Pohatu apologised to Ketar and to the others, and the BIONICLE.com story frames the moment as Pohatu valuing friendship above everything else. The final battle and after#

AgilAgilAgil was an Elemental Creature of Light native to Okoto, gold and silver in coloring and armed with talons, who served as the partner of Ekimu. went with the Toa and Ekimu to the Black Crater. When the Toa reached the top of Umarak's dark mountain, they found themselves cut off from Okoto's elements and caught in Umarak's shadow. Ekimu and Agil combined their power in a blast of Light that freed the Toa and weakened Umarak, which returned Ekimu to his normal form and made Agil disappear. The six elemental Creatures weren't at the mountain. They were holding the City of the Mask Makers against the Elemental Beasts. At the summit, Makuta sacrificed Umarak to complete his portal, and the Toa united their powers to seal Makuta back in the Shadow Realm, knowing it would send them back to the stars. The episode ends back in the now peaceful city, with Protector Izotor telling the story of the victory.
