The Labyrinth of Control
The shifting maze on an island off Okoto's Region of Jungle where the Elemental Creatures hid the Mask of Control, and where Umarak the Hunter stole it from the Toa.

He had not been told that they did. The impression did not develop into recognition. It surfaced and was set aside under the pressure of the search for the mask, and the question of who had built the labyrinth and why was never answered within the recorded events of the campaign.
Architecture of the shifting maze#
The labyrinth was not a static structure. Its passages shifted, reconfiguring the route from the entrance to the central chamber in a manner that defeated any attempt at memorising a path. Travellers without guidance could not reliably trace a course through it. The Okotans who knew of the island avoided it on principle, and no surviving OkotanOkotanThe Okotans were the villager population of Okoto, six regional groups corresponding to the island's six elemental regions, who lived through the Battle of the Mask Makers, the long retreat into the lesser villages, and the recovery of the Ancient City after the defeat of Kulta and the revival of Ekimu. account preserved a workable map.
The entrance itself required opening. When the ToaToa (2001)Biomechanical heroes bonded to elemental powers and masks. Not born, but chosen and transformed. reached the labyrinth, TahuTahu, Master of Fire: Leader of the Toa of OkotoTahu of Okoto was the Master of Fire summoned by the Protectors, the hot-tempered would-be leader of the Toa who opened the Labyrinth of Control and held the line at the Black Volcano. unsealed the outer gate, and the Elemental CreaturesThe Elemental Creatures of OkotoThe six elemental animals of Okoto, partnered with the Toa to recover the Mask of Control, joined by Agil the Creature of Light as Ekimu's seventh. led the team inward. The Creatures' guidance was the operative requirement for navigation. They had hidden the mask within and retained the knowledge of how to traverse the shifting passages back to the central chamber that held it. Without them, the maze was effectively impassable.
The central chamber held the Mask of ControlThe Mask of ControlThe Kanohi of mind control once worn by Makuta of Okoto, hidden by the Elemental Creatures, sought by the Toa, and lost with Umarak the Destroyer at the Black Crater. behind a lock unlike any other recorded on OkotoOkotoOkoto is a world whose known inhabitants include the Toa, the Mask makers, and the Protectors.. The chamber opened only when all six pathways were open at once, and stayed closed under any other condition. The design assumed that the mask would never be retrieved except by the prophesied heroes acting in concert with the Creatures who had hidden it, and that no agent in opposition to those conditions would be in a position to defeat them.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the Labyrinth of Control?
