How Did Johnny Silverhand Get a Nuke?
Johnny Silverhand didn't get the nuke himself. It came with the Militech-backed raid on Arasaka Tower in 2023, as a small tactical bomb meant to destroy Arasaka's database. The tabletop books say so outright; Cyberpunk 2077 just puts it in his helicopter.
Johnny Silverhand didn't go out and get a nuke. The bomb came with the Militech-backed raid on Arasaka Tower on 20 August 2023: the tabletop books say it was a small Militech device, carried in to destroy Arasaka's database if the raiders couldn't take it. Cyberpunk 2077 shows Johnny carrying and arming it, but never says where it came from. (Firestorm: Shockwave; Cyberpunk RED; Cyberpunk 2077)
Why there was a nuke at all#
The bomb belonged to a corporate war, not to Johnny. During the Fourth Corporate War, Arasaka kept its main computers offline and built up a clean database while the DataKrash tore through the Net. Whoever held it would have a huge advantage when the Net was rebuilt. (Firestorm: Shockwave; Cyberpunk RED)
Militech wanted that database, and organised a strike on Arasaka's Night City headquarters to get it. The team assigned to it carried a small tactical nuke: if they couldn't take the data, they would destroy it. (Firestorm: Shockwave; Cyberpunk RED)
Who carried it in the books#
Firestorm: Shockwave and Cyberpunk RED divide the raiders into teams. Johnny's, with Rogue, Shaitan and Spider Murphy, went for the Soulkiller labs to free Alt, and was also a decoy, chosen because it would draw Arasaka's attention. A second team went for the database. Morgan Blackhand led a third, a Militech strike force acting as support and rescue. (Firestorm: Shockwave; Cyberpunk RED)
Nobody is shown arming the bomb. On the way down, one of the Lobos saw Blackhand heading into a stairwell with a heavy case. Johnny was killed by Adam Smasher in the labs, the survivors escaped from the roof, and the bomb went off minutes later. Cyberpunk RED never names who set it off. (Cyberpunk RED)
The cover story came straight after. The US government blamed Arasaka, claiming it had set off its own failsafe nuke, a lie that held until the journalist Trace Santiago exposed it. Arasaka really did have a much bigger bomb hidden under the building, kept in case Militech ever overran it, and that one never detonated. (Cyberpunk RED)
How Cyberpunk 2077 tells it#
Cyberpunk 2077 shows the raid in the mission Love Like Fire, as a memory V relives from Johnny's engram. Johnny leaves his last gig, meets Rogue, and flies to the tower with her, Shaitan and Spider. On the roof, after the first firefight, he checks the payload: a miniature nuclear device to be planted inside the building. (Cyberpunk 2077)
They fight their way down to a lift, and the mission tells Johnny to deploy and arm the bomb in it. He sends it down the shaft, then goes off to upload the virus that frees Alt. Where the device came from, who built it and who paid for it are never mentioned. In this telling it's simply part of Johnny's operation. (Cyberpunk 2077)
The game's database doesn't fill the gap either. Its entry on the bombing says the corporate version blames an unidentified terrorist group, lists street theories from an inside job to a lab accident, and concludes that the date is the only undisputed fact. (Cyberpunk 2077)
So how did he get it?#
Put the two together and the fairest answer is that Militech gave the raid its bomb, and Johnny's memory moved it into his own hands. Interpretation: the game's journal entry for Love Like Fire says memories get replaced by the stories people tell, and Johnny's engram has every reason to remember himself as the man who brought Arasaka down. Whether he really carried it is the one thing the two versions refuse to agree on. (Cyberpunk RED; Cyberpunk 2077)

Frequently asked questions
- Where did the Arasaka Tower nuke come from?
- In the tabletop books it was a Militech device, a small tactical nuke the raiders brought in to destroy Arasaka's database if they couldn't take it. Cyberpunk 2077 never says who supplied it.
- Was it Johnny's nuke?
- Not in the tabletop version, where it belonged to the Militech operation and Morgan Blackhand was last seen with a heavy case. Cyberpunk 2077 shows Johnny carrying and arming it, but doesn't explain how he came to have it.
- Did Arasaka have a nuke in the tower too?
- Yes, in Cyberpunk RED. Arasaka kept a much bigger device hidden under the building in case Militech overran it. It never went off.
- How big was the Arasaka Tower nuke?
- Small. The books call it a tactical nuke, but Cyberpunk RED still puts the dead at more than 12,000 in the blast, with hundreds of thousands more dying later.

How Did Johnny Silverhand Die?
Johnny Silverhand died during the raid on Arasaka Tower on 20 August 2023, but the two versions of the story disagree on how. The tabletop books have Adam Smasher kill him in the tower. Cyberpunk 2077 has him captured and run through Soulkiller. Here are both.

Why Did Johnny Silverhand Nuke Arasaka Tower?
In Cyberpunk 2077 Johnny arms the bomb himself during the 2023 raid he joined to free Alt Cunningham. The tabletop books tell it differently: the nuke was Militech's, and Johnny was already dead when it went off. Here are both versions and why the game says not to trust his.

Adam Smasher: Arasaka's Full-Borg Killer From 2020 to 2077
Adam Smasher is the Arasaka cyborg who killed Johnny Silverhand, David Martinez and Rebecca, and the final boss of Cyberpunk 2077. Here's his full history across the tabletop games, Edgerunners and 2077, and whether you can actually kill him.
Alt Cunningham: the Netrunner Who Created Soulkiller
Alt Cunningham was Night City's best netrunner, Johnny Silverhand's girlfriend and the first victim of the program she invented. Here's her story from the tabletop game to Cyberpunk 2077, and what the thing behind the Blackwall really is.
Johnny Silverhand: the Rockerboy Who Nuked Arasaka
Johnny Silverhand is the frontman of Samurai, the man who attacked Arasaka Tower twice, and the engram living in V's head in Cyberpunk 2077. Here's his life in the tabletop game and the video game, where the two tell it differently, and what happens to him in each ending.
Morgan Blackhand: the Legendary Solo Missing from Cyberpunk 2077
Morgan Blackhand is the most famous Solo in Cyberpunk history, Mike Pondsmith's own character, and the man who fought Adam Smasher on the roof of Arasaka Tower in 2023. Here's his tabletop story, why he isn't in 2077's version of that night, and where he is now.
