Why Did Johnny Silverhand Nuke Arasaka Tower?
In Cyberpunk 2077 Johnny arms the bomb himself during the 2023 raid he joined to free Alt Cunningham. The tabletop books tell it differently: the nuke was Militech's, and Johnny was already dead when it went off. Here are both versions and why the game says not to trust his.
In Cyberpunk 2077, Johnny Silverhand nukes Arasaka Tower because he went in on 20 August 2023 to free Alt Cunningham and hit Arasaka as hard as he could, and his memory shows him arming the bomb himself. The tabletop books disagree. There the nuke was a Militech device brought in by the raiders, Johnny was killed before it went off, and who actually detonated it was never settled. (Cyberpunk 2077; Cyberpunk RED)
Why Johnny was in the tower at all#
Johnny's own motive was Alt. In 2013 Arasaka had used Soulkiller on her, and Johnny carried her body out without knowing her mind was still trapped in the corporation's systems. Ten years later the netrunner Spider Murphy found out that Arasaka was holding her, and Johnny signed on to get her back. (Cyberpunk RED)
The raid had bigger aims than his. By August 2023 Night City was Arasaka's last stronghold in North America, and the company had kept its main computers offline through the war, sitting on a clean database while the DataKrash wrecked the Net. Militech wanted that database. The team assigned to it carried a small tactical nuke to destroy it if it couldn't be taken. (Firestorm: Shockwave; Cyberpunk RED)
So the bomb wasn't Johnny's idea in the books. It belonged to the corporate operation he joined. But Johnny had been Arasaka's loudest enemy for years, which is why the blame stuck to him so easily. (Cyberpunk RED; Cyberpunk 2077)
The Cyberpunk 2077 version: Johnny arms it#
Cyberpunk 2077 shows the raid in the mission Love Like Fire, as a memory V relives from Johnny's engram on the Relic. After a last gig, Johnny flies to the tower with Rogue, Shaitan and Spider Murphy. (Cyberpunk 2077)
In this version Johnny carries the nuke himself, arms it and sends it down a lift shaft. He uploads the virus to free Alt with Spider guiding him, then fights back to the roof. An explosion knocks him loose from Rogue's grip as the helicopter lifts off, and Adam Smasher shoots him. He wakes in Arasaka's hands, Saburo Arasaka interrogates him, and he's put through Soulkiller. History remembers him as the terrorist who nuked the tower. (Cyberpunk 2077)
The game gives no separate reason for the nuke beyond the raid itself. Taken at face value, Johnny arms it to finish what the team came to do and to tear down the company he blamed for everything. (Cyberpunk 2077)
The tabletop version: a Militech bomb, and Johnny already dead#
Firestorm: Shockwave and Cyberpunk RED split the raiders into three teams. Johnny's team went for the Soulkiller labs and doubled as a decoy. A second team went for the database with the nuke. Morgan Blackhand led a third, as support and rescue. (Firestorm: Shockwave; Cyberpunk RED)
Johnny never made it out of the labs. When Smasher arrived, Johnny stepped out from cover with a gun in each hand and emptied both into him, and Smasher cut him in half with an autoshotgun. On the way down, one of the Lobos had seen Blackhand heading into a stairwell with a heavy case. On the roof, Blackhand stepped off the escape AV to face Smasher, and the survivors watched the two of them fighting as they flew away. Minutes later the bomb went off. (Cyberpunk RED)
Cyberpunk RED never names who triggered it. The US government blamed Arasaka, claiming the company had set off its own failsafe nuke, until the journalist Trace Santiago exposed the lie. Arasaka really did have a much bigger device hidden under the building, and it never detonated. (Cyberpunk RED)
Which version is true?#
The game tells you not to trust its own. Love Like Fire's journal entry says memories get replaced by the stories people tell us, and the in-game database entry on the bombing says the date is the only undisputed fact, with everything else down to speculation, gossip and corporate PR. (Cyberpunk 2077)
A fair reading, and it is a reading, is that the books record what happened and 2077 shows what Johnny's damaged engram remembers, with himself at the centre. Both agree on what matters most: Johnny went in for Alt, Smasher ended him, and the tower came down. (Cyberpunk RED; Cyberpunk 2077)
The full raid, team by team, is on the Arasaka Tower 2023 page. (Cyberpunk RED; Cyberpunk 2077)
Frequently asked questions
- Did Johnny Silverhand really nuke Arasaka Tower?
- It depends which version you follow. Cyberpunk 2077 shows him arming the bomb himself. In the tabletop books the bomb was a Militech device the raiders brought in, Adam Smasher had already killed Johnny, and nobody ever proved who set it off.
- Why did Johnny go back to Arasaka Tower in 2023?
- To rescue Alt Cunningham, his former girlfriend, whose mind Arasaka had trapped with Soulkiller ten years earlier. The raid itself was a Militech operation during the Fourth Corporate War.
- How many people died in the Arasaka Tower nuke?
- Cyberpunk RED puts the dead at more than 12,000 in the blast itself, with hundreds of thousands more dying later. Cyberpunk 2077's database says only the date is undisputed.
- Who did the government blame for the Arasaka Tower bombing?
- In Cyberpunk RED the US government blamed Arasaka, claiming it had set off its own failsafe nuke. Journalist Trace Santiago later exposed that as a lie.

How Did Johnny Silverhand Die?
Johnny Silverhand died during the raid on Arasaka Tower on 20 August 2023, but the two versions of the story disagree on how. The tabletop books have Adam Smasher kill him in the tower. Cyberpunk 2077 has him captured and run through Soulkiller. Here are both.
How Did Johnny Silverhand Get a Nuke?
Johnny Silverhand didn't get the nuke himself. It came with the Militech-backed raid on Arasaka Tower in 2023, as a small tactical bomb meant to destroy Arasaka's database. The tabletop books say so outright; Cyberpunk 2077 just puts it in his helicopter.
Is Johnny Silverhand Evil?
