Johnny Silverhand: the Rockerboy Who Nuked Arasaka
Johnny Silverhand is the frontman of Samurai, the man who attacked Arasaka Tower twice, and the engram living in V's head in Cyberpunk 2077. Here's his life in the tabletop game and the video game, where the two tell it differently, and what happens to him in each ending.
Johnny Silverhand is a rockerboy, the singer and guitarist of the band Samurai and a sworn enemy of Arasaka, who died in the 2023 attack on Arasaka Tower and came back fifty years later as a digital ghost in V's head. He's been part of Cyberpunk since the first tabletop edition in 1988, where he was the poster child for the rockerboy role, and in Cyberpunk 2077 he's the second lead, voiced and played by Keanu Reeves. The tabletop books and the game agree on the broad story and disagree on several key details. (Cyberpunk 2013; Cyberpunk 2077)
Who Johnny was: Samurai and the rockerboy#
In the 2077 version of his past, Johnny was born Robert John Linder, lied about his age to join the army and fought in the Second Central American War. He lost his left arm there, deserted, and came to Night City, taking a stage name from the silver cyberarm that replaced it. With his friend Kerry Eurodyne he formed Samurai, a band built on anger at corporations and the government that had sent him to war. (Cyberpunk 2077)
Samurai made it big and fell apart. The band split in 2008, and Johnny went solo, still writing songs against the corps. His records in 2077 include tracks like "Chippin' In" and "Never Fade Away", and the band's old haunts and memorabilia turn up all over the city. Along the way he had a long, rocky relationship with the solo Rogue Amendiares and another with the netrunner Alt Cunningham. (Cyberpunk 2077)
In the tabletop game Johnny was the example of what a rockerboy could be: a musician who uses fame to move crowds against the people in charge. He was never written as a hero. He's selfish, violent and careless with the people around him, and the game keeps that edge. (Cyberpunk 2020; Cyberpunk 2077)
Alt Cunningham and the first raid (2013)#
Alt was a brilliant netrunner who had written Soulkiller, a program that copies a person's mind and destroys the original. Arasaka kidnapped her in 2013 to make her build a version for them. Johnny gathered a team, used a free Samurai concert outside the tower as a diversion, and broke in to get her back. (Cyberpunk 2013)
He got there too late. Arasaka had already used Soulkiller on Alt, and Johnny carried out her body without knowing her mind was trapped in the corporation's systems. Alt later broke free and became an AI living beyond the Blackwall. The 2077 game retells this raid in flashbacks and keeps the same outline. (Cyberpunk 2013; Cyberpunk 2077)
Arasaka Tower 2023: how Johnny died#
During the Fourth Corporate War, Johnny went back to Arasaka Tower as part of a raid backed by Militech, with Morgan Blackhand leading one of the strike teams. Johnny's own goal was to find what was left of Alt. (Firestorm: Shockwave)
The two versions split here. See Arasaka Tower 2023 for the full raid.
- Tabletop. Johnny was killed inside the tower by Adam Smasher, who cut him down with a shotgun while the rest of the team got away. A small nuclear device brought in by the raiders then went off in the tower, flattening the centre of Night City. (Firestorm: Shockwave; Cyberpunk RED)
- 2077. In the engram's memory, Johnny himself arms the bomb, makes it to the roof, and is shot by Smasher as the escape helicopter leaves without him. Arasaka interrogated him, Saburo Arasaka had him run through Soulkiller, and his body was buried in the oil fields outside the city. History remembers him as the terrorist who nuked the tower. (Cyberpunk 2077)
The game is careful to show that the engram's version is a memory, not a record, and V can find hints that Johnny's account bends the truth. On the "Chippin' In" side job, V and Johnny go looking for what became of his body and his dog tags, starting at the oil fields. (Cyberpunk 2077, "Chippin' In")
The engram: Johnny in V's head#
Johnny's copied mind sat in Mikoshi, Arasaka's engram vault, for decades. Arasaka loaded him onto the Relic, an experimental chip, and Yorinobu Arasaka planned to sell it. After the Konpeki Plaza heist, V ended up with the chip in their head, and its repair systems began writing Johnny over V. (Cyberpunk 2077)
For most of the game Johnny appears as a hallucination that only V can see, mocking V's choices and pushing his own grudges. He can also take control of V's body for short stretches. V can treat him as a parasite or as a friend. Choices in conversations and side jobs such as "Chippin' In", "Blistering Love" (a last night out with Rogue) and the Samurai reunion with Kerry change how close the two become, and the closer they are, the more Johnny changes. (Cyberpunk 2077)
What happens to Johnny in each ending#
Johnny's fate follows V's choice on the rooftop in "Nocturne Op55N1". Which options exist depends on side jobs. (Cyberpunk 2077, "Nocturne Op55N1")
- The Devil. Arasaka removes the Relic, and Johnny is cut out of V for good. (Cyberpunk 2077, "Where is My Mind?")
- The Sun and The Star. In Mikoshi, Johnny lets V have the body back and goes beyond the Blackwall with Alt. (Cyberpunk 2077, "Path of Glory"; "All Along the Watchtower")
- Temperance. V lets Johnny keep the body and crosses the Blackwall with Alt. Johnny visits a few graves, says his goodbyes and leaves Night City to start again. (Cyberpunk 2077, "New Dawn Fades")
- (Don't Fear) The Reaper. Johnny suggests V storm the tower alone, then the same choice comes up in Mikoshi. Only offered if V and Johnny are close. (Cyberpunk 2077, "(Don't Fear) The Reaper")
In Phantom Liberty's Tower ending, NUSA doctors pull the Relic, and Johnny is gone with it. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
Where the tabletop and the game disagree#
The biggest gaps are how Johnny died and who set off the bomb. The tabletop puts his death in the tower at Smasher's hands, while the game has him captured and copied. The game also gives him a fuller backstory, from the Linder name to the army desertion, than the rulebooks spelled out. Cyberpunk RED and the 2077 era both treat the 2023 bombing as the event that made Johnny's name a legend and a curse in Night City. (Firestorm: Shockwave; Cyberpunk RED; Cyberpunk 2077)
Frequently asked questions
- Is Johnny Silverhand a real person?
- No. He's a fictional character Mike Pondsmith created for the Cyberpunk tabletop game in 1988. In Cyberpunk 2077 he's played by Keanu Reeves, which is why a lot of people assume he's based on someone real.
- Is Samurai a real band?
- Not in our world. Samurai's songs in Cyberpunk 2077, such as "Chippin' In" and "Never Fade Away", were recorded by the Swedish punk band Refused, credited in the game as performing for Samurai.
- Did Johnny Silverhand nuke Arasaka Tower?
- In Cyberpunk 2077, yes: his memories show him arming the bomb himself during the 2023 raid, before he is captured and put through Soulkiller. The tabletop books tell the same raid differently: a Militech-backed team brings the bomb in and Adam Smasher kills Johnny inside the tower.
- Is Johnny Silverhand a good guy?
- Not really. He's a reckless, selfish man who hurts the people closest to him, even if the corporation he fights deserves it. In the game he can soften a lot, depending on how V treats him.
- Can Johnny Silverhand survive in Cyberpunk 2077?
- Yes, in a way. In the Temperance ending V gives Johnny the body and he walks out of Night City alive. In every other ending his engram leaves, stays behind or is removed.
