Cyberpunk Games, Books and Shows in Order: Release Order and Story Order
Every Cyberpunk game, tabletop edition, anime, novel and comic in release order with exact dates, then the same works in story order from 2013 to 2077 and beyond. Plus where to start before Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 arrives on 20 October 2026.
Cyberpunk started as a tabletop role-playing game. Mike Pondsmith's R. Talsorian Games published the first edition in 1988, set in 2013, and every later edition moved the clock forward: 2020, then 2045 in Cyberpunk RED. CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 jumped to 2077 and built on that tabletop history, and the anime, novel and comics all sit in the same world. This page lists everything in release order, then in story order, matching the Cyberpunk timeline. (Cyberpunk; Cyberpunk 2020; Cyberpunk RED; Cyberpunk 2077)
Release order: the tabletop game#
The R. Talsorian books are the foundation. Each edition is set in a different year, so the setting has a long recorded history before 2077. (Cyberpunk; Cyberpunk 2020; Cyberpunk RED)
- Cyberpunk, 1988, R. Talsorian Games. A boxed set designed by Mike Pondsmith, set in 2013 and now usually called Cyberpunk 2013. It introduced Night City and the rockerboy Johnny Silverhand. (Cyberpunk)
- Cyberpunk 2020, 1990. The second edition moved the setting seven years on and gave the world its detailed history, from the Collapse of the 1990s to the corporate wars. Revised printings followed in 1992 and 1993. (Cyberpunk 2020)
- Firestorm: Stormfront and Firestorm: Shockwave, both 1997. Two campaign books that started the Fourth Corporate War between Arasaka and Militech and led to the 2023 attack on Arasaka Tower. (Firestorm: Stormfront; Firestorm: Shockwave)
- Cyberpunk V3.0, 2005. The third edition jumped to the 2030s. Much of it was later set aside when Cyberpunk RED and Cyberpunk 2077 rebuilt the timeline, so treat it as an alternate history. (Cyberpunk V3.0; Cyberpunk RED)
- Cyberpunk RED Jumpstart Kit, August 2019. A starter box that confirmed the Fourth Corporate War, the crash of the Net and the Arasaka Tower nuke as part of the current timeline. (Cyberpunk RED Jumpstart Kit)
- Cyberpunk RED, November 2020. The fourth edition, set in 2045 during the rebuilding after the war. It's the bridge between Cyberpunk 2020 and Cyberpunk 2077. (Cyberpunk RED)
- Cyberpunk Edgerunners Mission Kit, June 2024. A Cyberpunk RED box based on the anime, with background on Night City in the 2070s. (Cyberpunk Edgerunners Mission Kit)

- Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, 20 October 2026, Netflix. A new standalone 10-episode story with new characters, again from Studio Trigger, directed by Kai Ikarashi. See Edgerunners 2. (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premiere date announced alongside new trailer; Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is now in production)
- Project Orion (Cyberpunk 2), no date. CD Projekt Red announced the sequel on 4 October 2022 and moved it into preproduction in May 2025. (CD Projekt strategy update; CD Projekt Q1 2025 results)

Story (chronological) order#
- Cyberpunk (1988), 2013. Johnny Silverhand's raid on Arasaka to rescue Alt Cunningham. Cyberpunk 2077 replays this in a memory. (Cyberpunk; Cyberpunk 2077)
- Cyberpunk 2020, 2020. (Cyberpunk 2020)
- Firestorm: Stormfront and Shockwave, 2022 to 2023. The Fourth Corporate War and the Arasaka Tower nuke of 20 August 2023, also replayed from Johnny's side in Cyberpunk 2077. (Firestorm: Stormfront; Firestorm: Shockwave; Cyberpunk 2077)
- Cyberpunk RED, 2045, during the Time of the Red. (Cyberpunk RED)
- Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Madness, before the anime. (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Madness)
- Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, 2075 to 2076. (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners)
- Cyberpunk 2077, prologue in 2076, main story in 2077. (Cyberpunk 2077)
- Phantom Liberty, 2077, in the middle of the main story. One of its endings has an epilogue set two years later, in 2079. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
- Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, after David's death. CD Projekt Red hasn't given a year. (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is now in production)
- Project Orion, setting not announced. (CD Projekt strategy update)
The comics and No Coincidence are side stories in Night City around the 2070s, mostly without fixed dates. Ten of Swords leads straight into Phantom Liberty. (Cyberpunk 2077: Ten of Swords; Cyberpunk 2077: No Coincidence)
Where to start#
Most people should start with Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty. The game explains its own history through Johnny's memories, and update 2.0 means the version you play today is the best one. Play Phantom Liberty during the main story, not after it, because it adds an extra ending. (Cyberpunk 2077; Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
If you want something shorter, Edgerunners is ten episodes and tells a complete story. It's set just before the game, it shares Night City, Maelstrom and Adam Smasher, and it's the natural lead-in to Edgerunners 2. (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners)
The tabletop books are for people who want the whole history. Cyberpunk RED is the easiest way in: it covers the world from the 1990s to 2045 and is the most up to date with the game. Read the Cyberpunk 2077 story for the plot without playing. (Cyberpunk RED)
Frequently asked questions
- What order should I watch and play Cyberpunk in?
- Watch Cyberpunk: Edgerunners first if you want the quickest way in, then play Cyberpunk 2077 with Phantom Liberty. Edgerunners is set in 2075 and 2076, just before the game, and needs no homework. Then watch Edgerunners 2 from 20 October 2026.
- Should I watch Edgerunners before playing Cyberpunk 2077?
- You can do either. Edgerunners is a standalone story set a year or so before the game, so it spoils nothing big, and the game has a few nods to it that land better if you have seen it first.
- When does Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 come out?
- Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premieres on Netflix on 20 October 2026, with 10 episodes. It is a standalone story with new characters, made by Studio Trigger and CD Projekt Red and directed by Kai Ikarashi.
- When did Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty come out?
- Cyberpunk 2077 came out on 10 December 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows and Stadia. Phantom Liberty followed on 26 September 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and Windows, five days after the free update 2.0.
- Do I need to play the Cyberpunk tabletop game to understand 2077?
- No. Cyberpunk 2077 explains everything you need. The tabletop books fill in the history behind it, such as the Fourth Corporate War and the 2023 bombing of Arasaka Tower, and Cyberpunk RED is the best one to read if you want that background.
- Is there going to be a Cyberpunk 2?
- Yes. CD Projekt Red announced a sequel under the codename Project Orion on 4 October 2022 and said in May 2025 that it had moved into pre-production. It has no title, release date or confirmed setting yet.
