How Did Johnny Silverhand Lose His Arm?
Johnny Silverhand lost his left arm as a young soldier in the Second Central American War, deserted, and named himself after the silver cyberarm that replaced it. Here is what Cyberpunk 2077 and CD Projekt Red say, and what the tabletop books left out.
Johnny Silverhand lost his left arm fighting as a teenage soldier in the Second Central American War. He deserted, came to Night City, had the arm replaced with a silver cyberarm, and took his stage name from it. That's the version Cyberpunk 2077 tells, and CD Projekt Red's official account added that he lost a friend in the war along with the arm. (Cyberpunk 2077; Cyberpunk 2077 on X: Johnny Silverhand's real name)
The war that cost him the arm#
In Cyberpunk 2077's version of his past, Johnny was born Robert John Linder. He lied about his age to get into the army and was sent to fight in the Second Central American War, a US war in Central America. He lost his left arm in that war and deserted. (Cyberpunk 2077)
CD Projekt Red filled in a few more details on the game's official account in April 2022. Johnny was born on 16 November 1988 in College Station, Texas, and he went by Robert John Linder until he lost a friend and an arm while fighting in the Second Central American Conflict. (Cyberpunk 2077 on X: Johnny Silverhand's real name)
Neither source describes the moment itself. Nothing published says what weapon or blast took the arm, or exactly where it happened. What both agree on is the order of events: the war, the lost arm and the lost friend, then desertion. (Cyberpunk 2077; Cyberpunk 2077 on X: Johnny Silverhand's real name)
From Robert Linder to Johnny Silverhand#
After deserting, Johnny came to Night City and had the missing arm replaced with a silver cyberarm. He dropped the name Linder and built a new identity around the chrome: Johnny Silverhand. (Cyberpunk 2077)
The war shaped everything that came next. With his friend Kerry Eurodyne he formed the band Samurai, and the music came out of his anger at the corporations and the government that had sent him to fight. (Cyberpunk 2077)
A reasonable reading, and only a reading, is that the arm works as a permanent reminder. Every time he picks up a guitar or a gun he's using the part of him the war replaced, and he named himself after it rather than hiding it. (Cyberpunk 2077)
The arm in the tabletop game#
The chrome arm is older than the backstory. Johnny's write-ups in the tabletop books list a chromed left cyberarm with a built-in recorder among his cyberware. Those books treat the arm as part of who he is without spelling out the army years the way 2077 does. (Cyberpunk 2020; Firestorm: Shockwave)
The arm also ties into his famous gun. In the catalogue Chromebook, the Malorian Arms 3516 was built to Johnny's own specification, and its cyber interface was designed so only a user with a cyberarm and a smartgun link could get the most out of it. (Chromebook)
The page on Johnny's gear covers the gun, the Porsche and the arm together. (Chromebook; Cyberpunk 2077)
The arm in Cyberpunk 2077#
When Johnny's engram appears to V, he appears with the chrome arm, cigarette and all. It's part of how the game draws him in every scene, from the flashbacks of 2013 and 2023 to the conversations in V's head. (Cyberpunk 2077)
V can't take it, though. There's no cyberarm of Johnny's in the game for V to install. The closest V gets is Johnny's other belongings: in the side job Chippin' In, V and Rogue recover his Malorian and his Porsche, and Rogue hands V a replica of his Samurai jacket. (Cyberpunk 2077, "Chippin' In")
For his whole life story, from the army to the engram, see the Johnny Silverhand page. (Cyberpunk 2077)
