How Did Johnny Silverhand Die?
Johnny Silverhand died during the raid on Arasaka Tower on 20 August 2023, but the two versions of the story disagree on how. The tabletop books have Adam Smasher kill him in the tower. Cyberpunk 2077 has him captured and run through Soulkiller. Here are both.
Johnny Silverhand died in the attack on Arasaka Tower on 20 August 2023, and Adam Smasher killed him, but the two tellings disagree on the details. In the tabletop books, Smasher cut him in half with an autoshotgun inside the tower. In Cyberpunk 2077, Smasher shot him on the roof, then Arasaka took him alive and destroyed his mind with Soulkiller. (Cyberpunk RED; Cyberpunk 2077)
Why he was in the tower#
The raid of August 2023 was a Militech operation against Arasaka's last North American stronghold. Johnny's own reason was Alt, his former girlfriend, whose mind Arasaka had held since it used Soulkiller on her in 2013. Johnny led the team going for the Soulkiller labs, with Rogue, Shaitan and the netrunner Spider Murphy among them. (Firestorm: Shockwave; Cyberpunk RED)
That much both versions share. After it, they split. (Cyberpunk RED; Cyberpunk 2077)
The tabletop version: cut down by Smasher#
In Cyberpunk RED's account, Spider reached Alt and moved her into a data suitcase, and the team began to pull out. Then Smasher arrived with two squads. The first attack cut down most of the Militech troops and Lobos and pinned the rest of the team in the labs. (Cyberpunk RED)
Johnny had left Alt behind once before. He wasn't going to do it again. He stepped out from cover with a gun in each hand and emptied both into Smasher, and Smasher turned and cut him in half with an autoshotgun. The survivors made it to the roof, and minutes after their aircraft lifted off, the bomb went off and flattened the city centre. (Cyberpunk RED)
There's no capture and no Soulkiller in this version. Johnny dies in the fight, in the labs, before the nuke. (Firestorm: Shockwave; Cyberpunk RED)
The Cyberpunk 2077 version: captured and soulkilled#
Cyberpunk 2077 shows the raid in the mission Love Like Fire, as a memory V relives from Johnny's engram. Smasher and his team ambush Johnny as he leaves the network access point after uploading the virus to free Alt, and then there's a gap: the memory skips to Johnny reaching the roof, where Rogue is waiting in the helicopter. (Cyberpunk 2077)
He runs for the aircraft as it lifts off. Rogue grabs him, an explosion hits, and he falls away. Smasher walks up and shoots him where he lies. Johnny comes round briefly on a stretcher being carried through the chaos by Arasaka staff, then wakes again in an interrogation room. He can stay silent or mock the interrogators. Then Saburo Arasaka joins them, asks his own questions and orders Johnny put through Soulkiller. (Cyberpunk 2077)
That's the actual moment of death in the game. Soulkiller copies a person's mind into a digital engram and, in the versions Arasaka used for decades, leaves the body empty. Johnny's copy went into Arasaka's engram vault, Mikoshi, and his body, according to Smasher's associate Grayson, went into the ground in the oil fields outside Night City. That part of the story is on what happened to Johnny's body. (Cyberpunk 2077)
Which version is true?#
The game itself hedges. Love Like Fire's journal entry says our memories get replaced by people's stories, and that the past is built on lies. Cyberpunk 2077's database entry on the bombing says the date is the only undisputed fact. (Cyberpunk 2077)
Interpretation: the usual reading is that the books record what happened and the game shows what Johnny's damaged engram remembers, with himself as the hero who almost got away. The two agree on the essentials: Johnny went in for Alt, Smasher ended him, and he never left the tower as a free man. (Cyberpunk RED; Cyberpunk 2077)
What came after#
In the game's timeline, Johnny's engram sat in Mikoshi for decades until Anders Hellman loaded it onto the Relic prototype, the chip V ends up with after the Konpeki Plaza heist. That story is on how Johnny got into the Relic, and why the bomb went off at all is on why Johnny nuked Arasaka Tower. (Cyberpunk 2077)
Frequently asked questions
- Who killed Johnny Silverhand?
- Adam Smasher, in both versions, though in different ways. In the tabletop books Smasher cuts him in half with an autoshotgun inside Arasaka Tower. In Cyberpunk 2077 Smasher shoots him on the roof, and Arasaka finishes the job with Soulkiller.
- When did Johnny Silverhand die?
- On 20 August 2023, the night of the Militech-backed raid on Arasaka Tower in Night City, near the end of the Fourth Corporate War.
- Did Soulkiller kill Johnny?
- In Cyberpunk 2077, yes. Saburo Arasaka has him put through Soulkiller, which copies his mind into an engram and leaves his body dead. In the tabletop books he dies in the fight and Soulkiller plays no part in his death.
- Is Johnny Silverhand alive in Cyberpunk 2077?
- No. What V carries is his engram, a digital copy of his mind stored on the Relic chip. Whether that copy counts as Johnny is one of the questions the game keeps asking.

How Did Johnny Silverhand Get Into the Relic?
Arasaka captured Johnny in 2023, copied his mind with Soulkiller and kept the engram in Mikoshi for decades. Then Anders Hellman loaded it onto the Relic 2.0 prototype, the chip V ends up with after the Konpeki Plaza heist. Here's each step, and how the tabletop differs.

What Happened to Johnny Silverhand's Body?
In Cyberpunk 2077, Arasaka dumped Johnny Silverhand's body in an unmarked grave in the oil fields outside Night City after Soulkiller took his mind. The tabletop books hint at something stranger. Here's what each version says, and what V can find.

Why Did Johnny Silverhand Nuke Arasaka Tower?
In Cyberpunk 2077 Johnny arms the bomb himself during the 2023 raid he joined to free Alt Cunningham. The tabletop books tell it differently: the nuke was Militech's, and Johnny was already dead when it went off. Here are both versions and why the game says not to trust his.

Adam Smasher: Arasaka's Full-Borg Killer From 2020 to 2077
Adam Smasher is the Arasaka cyborg who killed Johnny Silverhand, David Martinez and Rebecca, and the final boss of Cyberpunk 2077. Here's his full history across the tabletop games, Edgerunners and 2077, and whether you can actually kill him.
Alt Cunningham: the Netrunner Who Created Soulkiller
Alt Cunningham was Night City's best netrunner, Johnny Silverhand's girlfriend and the first victim of the program she invented. Here's her story from the tabletop game to Cyberpunk 2077, and what the thing behind the Blackwall really is.
Johnny Silverhand: the Rockerboy Who Nuked Arasaka
Johnny Silverhand is the frontman of Samurai, the man who attacked Arasaka Tower twice, and the engram living in V's head in Cyberpunk 2077. Here's his life in the tabletop game and the video game, where the two tell it differently, and what happens to him in each ending.

How Did Johnny Silverhand Get a Nuke?
Johnny Silverhand didn't get the nuke himself. It came with the Militech-backed raid on Arasaka Tower in 2023, as a small tactical bomb meant to destroy Arasaka's database. The tabletop books say so outright; Cyberpunk 2077 just puts it in his helicopter.
