Minotauros Atreides: Duke Mintor, the bullfighter Duke of Caladan

Minotauros Atreides, known as Duke Mintor and remembered by later generations simply as the Old Duke, was the 266th Duke of House Atreides and ruler of Caladan from 10116 AG until his death in 10163 AG. Born a younger son of the ducal line and raised in his mother's household on the world of Nagge, he was never expected to rule, and he passed his early manhood as a student of weapons, politics, and the bullring rather than as an heir groomed for the throne. When the succession fell to him all the same, he governed Caladan for nearly half a century, brought the Mentat Thufir Hawat into Atreides service, and fathered Duke Leto I Atreides, which made him grandfather to Paul Atreides. The passion of his boyhood never left him. At the age of 104 he stepped onto the sand of the Corrida he had built on Nagge and was killed there by the bull El Muerte.

A boyhood on Nagge#

Minotauros Atreides was born in 10059 AG in the Old Palace on Caladan, the son of Duke Minos IX Atreides and his concubine, Lady Katlin Kalun. He did not grow up at his father's court. His mother raised him in her own household on Nagge, where he shared his childhood with his full sister, Io Atreides. He saw little of his father, and little more of Paulos XVIII Atreides and the five other siblings born to the Duke by other unions.

The boy's earliest enthusiasms were quiet ones. He took a great interest in simple things, in flowers and gardening, and liked nothing better than to question Gerasimos Herakleidos, the gardener of the Atreides mansion on Nagge, about plants and their keeping. That gentle apprenticeship soon gave way to a fiercer one. Watching Serapheim Hippodes, a friend of the gardener, handle horses and bulls with nothing more than a piece of colored cloth, young Mintor was entranced. Serapheim was protective of the boy at first and kept him at a distance from the animals, but he relented in time and introduced Mintor to the bullring. The sand of the Corrida would hold him for the rest of his life.

Heir Presumptive and student years#

Duke Minos IX died in 10077 AG, and the throne of Caladan passed to Mintor's demi brother, Paulos XVIII Atreides. Mintor himself was named Count Chalcedony and Heir Presumptive to the Duchy. Rather than settle into the ceremonial life of an heir in waiting, he asked his brother's permission to receive military training so that he could represent the Duchy abroad as an ambassador, and Paulos granted it.

The next ten years were spent in study, in weapons and defense, in politics, and in bullfighting. Mintor cut an unusual figure among the young nobility. He was tall, not accounted handsome, and possessed of a queer sense of humor, yet during his student years he was famous, especially among women, and a wanted guest at parties. It was in those years that he met Lovisa Rogier, called Louise, the bastard daughter of a Duke. Plain and short, her chief charm was her intelligence, and Mintor was taken by her wit. He brought her back to Caladan with him, and they married there when she was 25 years old.

His service did not go unrecognized at the imperial court. In 10109 AG, during the reign of the Padishah Emperor Fredhrick XIX, Minotauros Atreides was awarded the Emperor's Cross.

The 266th Duke of House Atreides#

In 10116 AG Duke Paulos XVIII died. He had fathered only unacknowledged bastards, none with any legal right to the throne, and so the succession passed to his demi brother. Minotauros Atreides became the 266th Duke of House Atreides and ruler of Caladan, holding among his honors the titles of Count Thuestes and Lord of Tantalos.

His standing among the Great Houses was such that in 10134 AG the Emperor Elrood IX named him to a special panel convened to decide the succession of House Khumali. Closer to home, his rule left House Atreides a more lasting inheritance. It was the Old Duke who brought the Mentat Thufir Hawat into the employ of House Atreides, where Hawat remained a loyal servant through three successive generations of Atreides rule. That long fidelity was taken as proof of the Duke's gift for inspiring loyalty in his men, a quality long held to run in the Atreides line.

His private life was marked by loss. Lovisa died in 10135 AG, and the marriage had produced no children. Mintor never married again. He took Bekah as his concubine, and with her he at last had his only son, Leto, though Bekah did not live to raise the boy, for she died in the delivery. The Duke saw to his heir's education in the duties of the House. When Leto was sixteen, his father sent him to the revolt at Mask Prime as the Designated Observer for House Atreides, giving the young man his first taste of the Imperium's quarrels at first hand.

Death in the Corrida#

The Duke's oldest passion outlasted every office he held. He built a Corrida near his old home on Nagge, on the world where Serapheim Hippodes had first shown him what a man could do with a bull and a piece of colored cloth, and he continued to face the animals long after most men would have set the cape aside. In 10163 AG, at the age of 104, Minotauros Atreides entered the bullring and was killed there by the bull El Muerte.

His son avenged his death, and after that day Leto never entered the Corrida again. The young man succeeded his father as Siridar Duke of Caladan, ending a rule of forty seven years.

Character and memory#

Those who knew Duke Mintor described a man of contradictions. He was tall and plain of face, with a strange humor all his own, given to cracking his lips at a side splitter, yet he charmed the courts and parties of his student years and won the devotion of retainers who served his House for generations after him. He had begun life asking a gardener about flowers and ended it on the sand before a bull, and between those two points he ruled one of the great fiefs of the Imperium for close to half a century.

To later generations of the Imperium he was simply the Old Duke, the grandfather whose death in the bullring became part of the inheritance of Paul Atreides. Those who had known the old man claimed to see essences of him in his grandson, a likeness carried forward into the line that would remake the known universe.
