Thamur's Corpse: the frozen grave of the giant stonemason

Thamur's Corpse was the vast frozen body of the giant stonemason Thamur, who fell upon a village in Midgard after a clash with Thor. The land around him remained an abandoned tundra, the site of two battles in Kratos and Atreus's journey.

By Joe Garratt

Thamur's Corpse was a location in Midgard named for the gargantuan dead body of the giant stonemason Thamur, who was killed by Thor before falling upon a village. Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir traveled there to recover a fragment of the giant's chisel, and the frozen land became the site of two of their fiercest battles in the Norse realms.

The fall of the stonemason#

Before its destruction, the village at the site was called Njordholm, named for the Vanir sea god Njord worshipped by its people. It was said that Njord himself would visit and feast with the villagers there. When the giant stonemason Thamur came to Midgard searching for his son Hrimthur, he unexpectedly met Thor, who attacked him. As Thamur fell, he crushed the village beneath him and was impaled through the brain by his own chisel. Being a frost giant, his dying breath froze the surviving villagers and the entire surrounding landscape. Thor took credit for both the giant's death and the destruction of the village, though Mimir held that the thunder god had simply gotten lucky. The corpse never moved again, the village was never rebuilt, and the land remained abandoned.

The battle for the chisel#

A fragment of Thamur's chisel was needed to open the secret gate to Jotunheim at Midgard's highest peak, and so Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir traveled to Thamur's Corpse. On the journey there Mimir told the story of the giant and the village. They found the corpse still in place and perfectly preserved, with the chisel tip buried beneath thick ice. After breaking the ice with the giant's own hammer, they drew the attention of Magni and Modi, the sons of Thor sent to aid Baldur in hunting the Spartan and his son. A fight broke out, and Kratos slew Magni, forcing Modi to flee.

The clash with Baldur#

Much later, after Kratos and Atreus recovered Mimir's missing eye from the stomach of Jormungandr, the World Serpent was attacked by Baldur and spat the pair out, dropping them once more at Thamur's Corpse. A fight erupted between them and Baldur, and his mother, the Vanir goddess Freya, used her magic to pilot the giant's vast body in an attempt to protect her son. The effort failed when Atreus called out to Jormungandr in a dead tongue, and the serpent struck the corpse. After Baldur's death much of the land beyond the corpse was made impassable, as the back of the giant's right hand fell to block the path.
