Thamur's Chisel: the giant's tool that carved the way to Jotunheim
Thamur's Chisel was the great mason's chisel of the dead giant Thamur, frozen with his corpse in Midgard. A fragment of it could carve the travel rune to Jotunheim, making it the key Kratos and Atreus needed to reach the realm of the giants.
Thamur's Chisel was the mason's tool of the dead giant Thamur, a magical chisel capable of carving the travel rune to Jotunheim, the realm of the giants. It became central to the journey of Kratos and Atreus, who needed a way into a realm that had long been sealed off. The knowledge of the chisel came from Mimir, who guided the pair to the frozen corpse of the giant where it lay.
A tool of the giants#
Thamur had been a giant of great size, and his corpse lay frozen across a vast stretch of Midgard, a tundra of ice with the remains of his body and his enormous hammer scattered across it. His chisel was no ordinary mason's tool. Mimir knew it to be a magical implement, one capable of carving the travel rune required to open a path to Jotunheim, a realm that had been closed to travelers. With the giants gone from Midgard and their realm hidden, the chisel offered Kratos and Atreus the means they had been seeking to continue their journey to scatter the ashes of Faye.
The path to the chisel#
After the World Serpent Jormungandr shifted the great bridge across the Lake of Nine and receded the waters, new reaches of the lake opened and the way to Thamur's Corpse became passable. Mimir led Kratos and Atreus through the Mason's Channel and into the icy region where the giant lay.
The chisel fragment they needed was lodged beneath the ice near the giant's head. To free it, Kratos manipulated the dead giant's body and at last directed Thamur's own colossal hammer to fall, shattering the ice that sealed the chisel away. The frozen ruin was guarded by hostile creatures, including the wolf-like Wulvers and the ice troll called the Icebeard King, all of which stood between the travelers and their goal.
Magni and Modi#
As Kratos approached the freed chisel, Magni and Modi, the sons of Thor, arrived to stop him. The two brothers fought as a pair, Magni wielding a lightning sword and Modi a charged mace and shield, and they turned the battle into a contest against both Kratos and Atreus at once. Kratos defeated the brothers in the shadow of Thamur's corpse, a killing that would draw the wrath of Thor and Odin in time.
With the brothers beaten, Kratos walked to the great chisel and cut a piece from it with his axe. The fragment gave him not only the power to inscribe the travel rune to Jotunheim but also a means to open the sealed Hidden Chamber doors he had encountered across the realms.
