Thamur's Chisel

the mason's tool that opened the road to Jotunheim

Thamur's Chisel was the great stonemason's tool, frozen within the head of his fallen corpse in Midgard. A shard of its magic tip could carve the secret rune that opened the way to Jotunheim, making it the key to the last hidden road into the realm of the Giants.

By Joe Garratt

Thamur's Chisel was the stonemason's tool of the Frost Giant Thamur, left frozen within the head of his vast corpse where he had fallen in Midgard. According to Mimir, a piece taken from its magic tip could carve the travel rune that opened the way to Jotunheim. With every other road into the realm of the Giants closed, the chisel became the key that Kratos and Atreus needed to complete their journey.

A mason's tool turned weapon of fate#

Thamur was renowned as the greatest stonemason who ever lived, and the chisel was the instrument of his craft. When he was ambushed in Midgard while searching for his son, the giant fell head first onto his own chisel and was killed instantly, his enormous body coming to rest across the land and freezing where it lay. The tool remained lodged in his frozen head long after his death, its tip still glowing with a faint magic.

Because the Giants had hidden every path to their homeland, the chisel held an importance far beyond its origins. Tyr had severed his temple's connection to Jotunheim and the realm tower had been concealed, leaving the chisel the means by which the secret rune of the Giants could be carved into the realm travel machinery. Mimir, who knew the old lore, recognised that whoever held a shard of its tip could open the last road into Jotunheim.

The retrieval#

To reach the chisel, Kratos and Atreus made the long journey across the frozen body of Thamur. The tip itself lay buried beneath a great wall of ice within the corpse, too thick to break by ordinary means. The answer lay in the giant's own grandest tool. Working through the body, Kratos freed and toppled Thamur's massive hammer, sending it crashing down to shatter the ice and expose the glowing chisel below.

As Kratos approached, Magni and Modi, the sons of Thor, came upon him to stop him from claiming the prize. The two attacked together, one striking with a lightning blade and the other with a charged mace and shield. Kratos overcame the brothers, and with them defeated he walked to the chisel and cut a piece from it with the Leviathan Axe. With that shard in hand he gained not only the power to inscribe the rune that opened the way to Jotunheim, but the means to unlock the hidden chambers that had been sealed across the Lake of Nine.
