Urdnot Bakara (Eve)

Krogan Shaman and Survivor of the Cure

Urdnot Bakara, called Eve by her salarian doctor, was a female krogan shaman and the sole survivor of Maelon's genophage experiments. She became a symbol of hope for her people and a voice for unity during the war against the Reapers.

By Joe Garratt

Urdnot Bakara, better known by the name Eve, was a female krogan shaman and the only survivor of the experiments conducted on female krogan in 2185 to cure the genophage. Recovered by the salarian Special Tasks Group and later freed with the help of Commander Shepard, she became a steadying voice for her people, urging unity in the war against the Reapers and standing as living proof that the krogan could heal.

Bakara the shaman#

Her birth name was Urdnot Bakara, but she gave it up when she became shaman of the female krogan clan, and for years she revealed it to no outsider. To prove her resolve she had been sealed in a cave for a week with only enough food to survive, left in complete darkness with nothing but her own heartbeat for company, and was made to claw her way out before her time ran short. Though she began digging in the wrong direction, a crystal shard she found in the dark guided her to freedom, a token she would carry as a reminder that even in the darkest hour there was always a way out.

She was the lone survivor of the experiments that the rogue salarian Maelon had carried out on female krogan on Tuchanka in 2185, seeking a cure for the genophage. After those efforts ended, she and a number of other female krogan were taken by the salarian Special Tasks Group and transferred to Sur'Kesh for further study.

Freedom and the name Eve#

When salarian authorities held the surviving females as prisoners and test subjects, the krogan leader brought the conspiracy to light at a war summit and refused any alliance unless the females were freed. With the support of Primarch Victus, Shepard persuaded the salarian Dalatrass to release them, and the Commander oversaw the transfer. By the time Shepard reached the base, Bakara alone remained, the others having died of complications from Maelon's work. When Cerberus attacked the facility, she proved her strength on emerging from her pod, seizing the krogan leader's shotgun and cutting down two troopers before they could react.

Aboard the Normandy SR-2, she was taken to the medical bay while the cure was prepared, but she would not give her true name. Her salarian doctor, Mordin Solus or his colleague Padok Wiks, named her Eve after human mythology, judging it fitting aboard a human vessel. She formed a close bond with her doctor and offered the Commander quiet wisdom about female krogan and the future she hoped for her people.

Voice for the krogan future#

When the krogan gathered to spread the cure through the Shroud, hostility flared at the Hollows over the presence of a salarian, but Eve averted the violence with a speech urging the clans to set aside their differences and fight the Reapers together. During the operation against the Reaper guarding the Shroud, she proposed the plan that would carry the day, recalling that the two greatest Maw Hammers in existence stood nearby and could summon Kalros, the mother of all thresher maws. Tuchanka, she said, was as much her home as any krogan's, and if the hammers were struck, the great maw would come.

Whether Eve lived through the cure depended on the data available to her doctor; with Maelon's research intact she survived, but on incomplete data she died of complications, and the krogan held a funeral pyre for her in the heart of the Hollows. Even after the genophage was settled she remained at risk, for she was rallying the clans in the Kelphic Valley when an old turian doomsday device could detonate. Should she survive all of this, she went on to speak to the gathering clans so the cure would not be taken for granted, and in the days that followed she stood as a symbol of the krogan reborn, glimpsed cradling a krogan child in the dawn of her people's renewal.
