Urdnot Wreav

Traditionalist Krogan Warlord

Urdnot Wreav was the broodbrother of Urdnot Wrex and a hardline traditionalist krogan. In some accounts he led Clan Urdnot, favoring conquest and intimidation over the unity his brother preached.

By Joe Garratt

Urdnot Wreav was the broodbrother of Urdnot Wrex, the two sharing the same mother but born a decade apart. Where Wrex looked to the future of the whole krogan people, Wreav was a hardline traditionalist who prized his own clan above the species and preferred war to peace. In accounts where Wrex did not survive to lead Clan Urdnot, Wreav rose to become its chieftain, and his aggression colored the krogan role in the war against the Reapers.

A broodbrother in Wrex's shadow#

Wreav and Wrex shared a mother but were born ten years apart, and the two grew into opposites. Wrex came to see the survival of the krogan as a whole as the only cause worth fighting for, while Wreav held to the old ways, placing his clan above the species and treating war as the natural state of a krogan. He carried the racial resentments common among traditional krogan, voicing open contempt for turians and salarians alike.

In playthroughs where Wrex did not survive his time alongside Commander Shepard, or never joined the Commander's crew, Wreav inherited the leadership of Clan Urdnot. When Shepard first encountered him on Tuchanka under those circumstances, Wreav thanked the Commander for clearing his path to power. Rival traditionalists such as Gatatog Uvenk posed little real challenge to his rule, and Wreav even welcomed the tank-bred Grunt into Urdnot after the young krogan passed the Rite of Passage, reasoning that the hatred such a choice might stir was itself useful.

Rule by force#

As chieftain, Wreav governed Clan Urdnot through intimidation. He commissioned more weapons of mass destruction than any krogan in known history and had already turned some against rival clans, though Urdnot still kept a stockpile of conventional arms. His strategy toward the wider galaxy was built on threat rather than action; he understood that the mere promise of a krogan invasion would force others to listen, so he rarely needed to follow through.

Where Wrex showed respect to the female krogan shaman known as Eve, Wreav regarded her and female krogan in general as property, dismissing Eve as a "nag." His second-in-command in this role was Jorgal Thurak. Self-interest guided his every move, and he sought always to bend events toward his own advantage or that of the krogan as a whole.

The genophage and the Reaper War#

When the krogan moved to cure the genophage, Wreav's traditionalism flared. Meeting Shepard in the Hollows, the sacred neutral ground of the krogan, he objected to the presence of the salarian doctor Mordin Solus, or his colleague Padok Wiks, even on learning the salarian intended to lift the curse. During the assault on the Shroud facility, where a Reaper stood guard, Wreav's tomkah was destroyed by Kalros, the mother of all thresher maws, and he was believed killed.

In accounts where he survived as leader, Wreav seized credit for the cure the moment it was achieved, spreading tales of the day Wreav cured the genophage so that all krogan would come to view him as their ultimate authority. Even as his forces joined the final battle for Earth, he was overheard ordering his warriors to cooperate with the other species while studying their tactics and formations, a sign that he intended future violence against the galaxy once the Reapers were gone.
