Sur'Kesh: The Salarian Homeworld

Sur'Kesh was the lush, jungle-covered homeworld of the salarians, the seat of their breeding rules and government, and the site of a secret STG base raided by Cerberus during the search for a genophage cure.

By Joe Garratt

Sur'Kesh was the homeworld of the salarians, a hot and humid jungle world likened to the rainforests of Earth, beautiful to behold but uncomfortable and dangerous to the unwary. It was the heart of salarian society and government, and during the Reaper war it became the site of the secret research base where the search for a cure to the genophage reached a turning point.

A jungle homeworld#

Sur'Kesh was often likened to the jungles of Earth: pretty to look at, teeming with life, uncomfortable to live in, and dangerous to the unwary. Early in the development of their society the technophilic salarians had created significant pollution and waste problems, but they embraced social solutions just as quickly. Through complex breeding rules the salarians kept Sur'Kesh's population crowded but sustainable. The world tended to be wetter than Earth, and salarian cities spared no expense to collect and provide fresh water, as befit an amphibious species. It served as the seat of salarian government and the home of their political leadership.

In the path of the Reapers#

Because Sur'Kesh lay far from dark space within the galaxy, it had not yet been invaded when the Reaper war engulfed other homeworlds. Its rulers were nonetheless acutely aware that they stood in the path of the attack to come. Salarian military doctrine favored striking the first blow, and because they could not do so against the Reapers, many among their leadership already regarded their forces as being at a severe disadvantage.

The genophage cure#

During the war, a salarian Special Tasks Group base on Sur'Kesh held a fertile female krogan, a survivor whose continued health was vital to any hope of curing the genophage. Commander Shepard came to the world to secure her as part of the effort to forge an alliance between the krogan and the turians against the Reapers. Cerberus, opposed to that alliance, raided the base to kill the female before she could be recovered, and salarian gunships clashed with Cerberus forces over the facility. Shepard's intervention secured her safe extraction, after which she and the salarian scientist Mordin Solus continued the work that would carry the cure on to Tuchanka.
