Is Shepard in the Next Mass Effect?
BioWare hasn't said. The teasers keep pointing back at Shepard, with N7 armour in the snow and a Shadow Broker who looks a lot like Liara, but nothing official confirms Commander Shepard as a character in the next game.
BioWare hasn't said. A new Mass Effect game is officially in development, and its teasers lean heavily on Commander Shepard, but nothing BioWare has published, up to its latest update in November 2025, confirms that Shepard is a character in it, let alone the hero. Everything beyond that is fan reading of the teasers. (EA, N7 Day 2025)
What BioWare has actually said#
The game was first mentioned on N7 Day 2020, in the same blog post that announced the Legendary Edition remaster. BioWare's then studio head Casey Hudson wrote that a veteran team was working on the next chapter of the Mass Effect universe, that it was at an early stage, and that he couldn't say more. (BioWare Blog, Happy N7 Day 2020)
Five years later, Mike Gamble, executive producer on Mass Effect, wrote that the next game is in development, that EA and BioWare are committed to more stories in the universe, and that the team is now focused only on Mass Effect, with romances still to work out. He didn't mention Shepard in connection with the game. (EA, N7 Day 2025)
That's the whole of the official record on the game. There's no title, no release date and no named protagonist. (EA, N7 Day 2025)
Why fans think Shepard is coming back#
The teasers keep pointing at Shepard without naming anyone. The December 2020 trailer ends on a winter planet, where a hooded figure climbs to the top of a slope and an asari who looks like Liara T'Soni picks up a shard of N7 armour. The title card says Mass Effect will continue. (TechRadar on the 2020 teaser)
N7 is the Alliance special forces designation Shepard carries through the trilogy, but plenty of soldiers wear it, and the trailer never says whose armour it is. (TechRadar on the 2020 teaser)
On N7 Day 2023, Gamble listed the questions the team had been asking itself: who really died, the endings, what's going on with the asari scientist who became the Shadow Broker. Then he started one more, "What about S", and broke off. Fans took that as Shepard. It's a tease, and that's our reading of it, not a confirmation. (EA, N7 Day 2023)
The problem with bringing Shepard back#
Mass Effect 3 leaves very little room for it. In Control, Synthesis and Refuse, Shepard dies or stops being human. Only Destroy, with a strong enough war effort, ends on a shot of Shepard taking a breath in the rubble, and BioWare has never said which ending is canon. A sequel that brings Shepard back would have to settle that, or work around it. The page on what happened to Shepard after Mass Effect 3 goes through each ending. (Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut)
The Amazon TV series is a different matter, and Gamble has been direct about it. In the same 2025 post he said the show tells a new story set after the original trilogy and won't retread Shepard's story, because that story belongs to the players. That's about the show, not the game. (EA, N7 Day 2025)
So the honest answer is maybe, but nobody official has said yes. BioWare posts a Mass Effect update every N7 Day, 7 November, so that's the date to watch. (BioWare Blog, Happy N7 Day 2020; EA, N7 Day 2023; EA, N7 Day 2025)
