What Happened to Shepard After Mass Effect 3? Every Ending

It depends on the ending. Shepard dies in Control, Synthesis and Refuse, and can survive only in Destroy, with a strong enough war effort. Here's what happens to Shepard in each ending, what the epilogues show and what later games have said.

By Joe Garratt

What happens to Commander Shepard after Mass Effect 3 depends on which ending the player picks. In Control, Shepard's body burns away and Shepard's mind becomes the new controller of the Reapers. In Synthesis, Shepard is broken down to merge organic and synthetic life. In Refuse, Shepard dies with the rest of the cycle. Destroy is the only ending where Shepard can live, and only with a strong enough war effort. (Mass Effect 3; Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut)

How Shepard gets to the choice#

During the final assault on London, the Reaper Harbinger fires on Shepard's team as they run for the beam into the Citadel. Shepard survives, barely, and crawls through. On board, the Illusive Man uses Reaper control to make Shepard shoot Anderson, and then dies himself. Anderson dies sitting beside Shepard. The Crucible docks but doesn't fire, and Shepard, bleeding and close to collapse, is lifted up to meet the Catalyst. The full sequence is in Mass Effect 3 ending explained. (Mass Effect 3)

Destroy: the ending where Shepard can live#

In Destroy, Shepard shoots a conduit and the Crucible releases a wave that wipes out every Reaper. It also destroys all synthetic life, including the geth and EDI. The Catalyst warns that Shepard, partly synthetic since the Lazarus Project, could be killed too. (Mass Effect 3; Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut)

If the player's war effort is strong enough, the ending adds one short scene before the credits. In a pile of concrete and steel, Shepard, still in N7 armour, takes a breath. That's the only time the trilogy shows Shepard alive after the final choice. The game doesn't say where it is, who finds Shepard or what happens next. (Mass Effect 3; Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut)

The memorial scene reflects it. In the other endings, Shepard's love interest or closest crew member places Shepard's nameplate on the Normandy's memorial wall, above Anderson's. In this version of Destroy, they hold the nameplate, smile and don't put it up. (Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut)

Why Shepard can survive this one is never stated. A common reading is that Destroy is the only ending that doesn't use up Shepard's body, and that the Lazarus cybernetics weren't enough of a synthetic to be wiped out. That's interpretation; the game only shows the breath. (Mass Effect 2; Mass Effect 3)

Control: Shepard becomes the Catalyst#

Control is what the Illusive Man wanted. Shepard grabs two charged handles, and the energy burns Shepard's body away while Shepard's mind replaces the Catalyst. The Reapers stop fighting and help rebuild, under Shepard's direction. In the Extended Cut epilogue, the new Shepard narrates as a machine intelligence, and its tone depends on whether the player was Paragon or Renegade. Shepard survives in a sense, but not as a person anyone can meet. (Mass Effect 3; Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut)

Synthesis: Shepard is broken down#

Synthesis appears only with a high enough war score. Shepard walks into the beam at the centre of the Crucible and comes apart, and that energy spreads across the galaxy, giving every living thing a blend of organic and synthetic traits. The Reapers become partners in rebuilding. EDI, who lives through it, narrates the epilogue. Shepard doesn't survive. (Mass Effect 3; Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut)

Refuse: Shepard dies with the cycle#

The Extended Cut added a fourth option. Shepard can reject the Catalyst's choices, or shoot it, and it answers that the cycle will continue. The Reapers win. Shepard, already dying, dies with this cycle. The epilogue shows a future species finding the messages Liara recorded during the war and suggests they used them to beat the Reapers. (Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut)

What came after#

After the credits of every ending, an old man on an alien world tells a child stories about "the Shepard". It's a legend by then, a figure from a long-gone age. (Mass Effect 3; Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut)

No later game has picked up the story. Mass Effect: Andromeda is set in another galaxy, and its colonists left the Milky Way in 2185, before the Reapers arrived. They never find out how the war ended. Which ending happened, and so whether Shepard lived, is still the player's call. (Mass Effect: Andromeda)

Frequently asked questions

Is Shepard alive after Mass Effect 3?
Only in one version of one ending. If the player picks Destroy with a high enough war effort, a final shot shows Shepard taking a breath in the rubble. In every other outcome Shepard dies or stops being human.
Does Shepard become the Catalyst in the Control ending?
Yes. Shepard's body burns away and Shepard's mind takes the Catalyst's place as the intelligence controlling the Reapers. The epilogue is narrated by this new Shepard.
Who puts Shepard's name on the memorial wall?
Shepard's love interest, or the crew member Shepard was closest to. In the Destroy ending where Shepard survives, they hold the nameplate but don't put it up.
Is Shepard in Mass Effect: Andromeda?
No. Andromeda's colonists left the Milky Way in 2185, before the Reaper War, and never learn how it ended.
