Castanar
Dominion Fringe World
Castanar was a nondescript planet on the fringe of Dominion space, notable as the site of a secret Terran Dominion research installation that cloned protoss-zerg hybrids as part of a clandestine breeding program.
Castanar was a planet within the Castanar system, on the fringe of Terran Dominion space. It was a nondescript world with little in the way of natural resources. Its significance lay not in the planet itself but in a secret research installation in the Castanar system, where the Dominion pursued a clandestine program to clone protoss-zerg hybrids.
The planet#
Castanar was a planet within the Castanar system, lying on the fringe of Terran Dominion space. It was a nondescript world with little in the way of natural resources, of no particular note in its own right.
The Castanar installation#
The world's importance came from the Castanar installation, a secret Terran Dominion research facility in the Castanar system. It was disguised as a beryllium storage warehouse, scan-shielded, and defended with numerous systems including sentry guns and A.R.E.S. warbots. The facility also housed experimental plasma and even alien weapons.
By the Second Great War, the installation had cloned a protoss-zerg hybrid using technology generally beyond terran capability, as part of its secret Hybrid Breeding Program. Arcturus Mengsk planned to terminate its staff. During a raid on Korhal, Raynor's Raiders stumbled upon a science facility containing the location and access codes for the Castanar installation. The rebels then descended on Castanar and destroyed the fusion reactor when they discovered the hybrid experiment and the facility's other projects. The explosion released a powerful hybrid reaver that began to rampage around the installation, and the Raiders escaped in a captured Hercules dropship.
