Who was Gui Montag?#
He was a Confederate firebat whose recorded service runs from a squadron victory at Tal Qirat, where he held the rank of corporal, through to promotion to major of Omega Squadron's 28th. The timing of that promotion is not fixed by any source.
What is fixed is that Omega Squadron did not survive the zerg invasion of Tarsonis in 2500, and Montag did. He turned up afterward wearing Terran Dominion colors.
The Enslavers campaign#
In one branch of the Enslavers bonus campaign, Montag is assigned to help a Dominion taskforce dismantle the operations of the notorious pirate Alan Schezar, who was controlling zerg using captured protoss khaydarin crystals. The taskforce ignored what the protoss held prisoner by Schezar had to say and destroyed the cerebrate outright. Montag radios the commander to report that the cerebrate is dead and that there is no sign of Schezar anywhere. He does not get to finish the sentence. In the chaos of the battle Schezar and his men escaped to Aiur to rebuild the operation.
The unit that never shipped#
Montag's unit appears only in the StarEdit map editor, as a firebat hero: 160 health, 3 armor, small size, sight 7, and a Perdition flamethrower dealing 16 damage across two attacks at a range of 2, with a cooldown of 22. He has Stim Pack, and standard terran infantry weapon and armor upgrades apply. His one in-game appearance is StarCraft: Enslavers, where he never appears as a unit at all.
His rank is a mess across sources. The StarCraft manual has him as a corporal at Tal Qirat. Blizzard's own terran unit overview page calls him a major. The map editor lists him as first sergeant.
Is the name a reference?#
Guy Montag is the fireman in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 whose job is burning books rather than putting fires out, and naming a flamethrower trooper Gui Montag is about as direct as that kind of nod gets.
