Battlestar Athena was a Jupiter-class battlestar in service with the Colonial Fleet during the First Cylon War. Athena took part in what was considered among the most desperate battles of the war, including the Battle of Gamelon, where a young Saul Tigh, fresh out of pilot training, shot down three Cylon fighters.

History#

Athena was the fifth Jupiter-class battlestar to be constructed and belonged to Picon. She was deployed just in time to lift the Cylon siege of her sponsor planet, fighting alongside Fleet Group Daidalos.

She went on to take part in what was considered among the most desperate battles of the First Cylon War. At the Battle of Gamelon, a newly trained pilot named Saul Tigh shot down three Cylon fighters.

Class and capabilities#

As a Jupiter-class vessel, Athena carried the design that made the class one of the heaviest warships in the Colonial Fleet. Kinetic energy weapons were arranged across the dorsal and ventral hull in groups of four, supplemented by twelve missile tubes capable of firing conventional and nuclear-tipped ordnance. Hundreds of CIWS point-defense emplacements and two-layered armor plating made up her defenses.

Large retractable flight pods supported a complement of Vipers, Raptors, and shuttles. As with every Jupiter, Athena's computers were kept unnetworked to guard against Cylon hacking, a precaution that slowed faster-than-light calculation but greatly reduced the threat of infiltration.
