Hau, KakamaKakamaThe Mask of Speed granted superhuman velocity but blinded its wearer to the world around them., and PakariPakariThe Mask of Strength amplifies physical power and never stops working, giving its wearer a constant edge.. How an Aki is formed#

An Aki is made by merging a Hau, a Pakari, and a Kakama, which is what happens when Tahu, Onua, and Pohatu fuse. If the mask were taken off its Kaita, it would stay merged for as long as the Kaita existed. (BIONICLE: Encyclopedia Updated)

That ties the Aki to Akamai in a way ordinary Kanohi aren't tied to their wearers. A Hau worn by Tahu is a separate mask that can be taken off and replaced, while the Aki comes from the fusion itself, and when Akamai split, Tahu, Onua and Pohatu were left wearing their own masks again.
