On the island of Mata Nui, Onepu took part in the Battle of Kini-Nui, the largest conflict involving the Matoran of the island. In its aftermath he met with the revived Chronicler Takua and informed him that something strange was happening in Onu-Koro, sending Takua on toward the underground village with the Ussal crab Pewku.
When the Bohrok swarms laid siege to Onu-Koro, the inventor Nuparu discovered an inactive Gahlok and learned that the Bohrok were non-living machines paired with Krana. With aid from Onepu and Taipu, Nuparu modified the Gahlok shell into a combat vehicle called the Boxor, which dislodged a Bohrok's Krana with powerful punches. Onepu went on to serve in the Boxor Squad alongside Nuparu, Taipu, and Damek, groups of Matoran piloting Boxors who were dispatched to Ga-Koro, Le-Koro, and other locations to fight the swarms.
Onepu was also among the Matoran who claimed a Copper Mask of Victory, the prize awarded in the koro games, joining winners such as Hafu, Hahli, Hewkii, Kopeke, Macku, and Takua. He later resided on Spherus Magna following the evacuation of the Matoran Universe.
