What Is It?#

The Power Source made it all possible.
Origins and Purpose#
The Power Source leaves us with more questions than answers. The Great BeingsThe Great BeingsScholar-inventors of Spherus Magna whose creations shaped the Matoran Universe and whose absence defined the conflicts that followed. created it, but the canon never clarifies whether they designed it specifically for the PrototypePrototype (Dark Hunter)An unstable fusion of Fire and Earth, Prototype was forged through biomechanical mutation and hired for his violent unpredictability. Robot or built it for some other purpose. One plausible reading holds that it was always intended as a backup power system for Mata NuiMata Nui (Location)An island created by accident on the Great Spirit's face, home to the Matoran for a thousand years., in case his organic systems failed (which, by 2010, they had). This remains speculation, but it fits the larger pattern of the Great Beings' contingency planning. Consider that the entire universe of Bionicle was constructed as an insurance policy. Why wouldn't they also create backup power sources? Without the Power Source, the 2010 endgame would've been impossible.
