Prescience

the spice-borne sight

Prescience was the ability to perceive past, present, and future. Certain awareness-spectrum narcotics, the spice melange foremost among them, could open this sight in their users. The Atreides line carried prescience to its greatest heights, from Paul Muad'Dib to the God-Emperor Leto II.

Prescience was the term commonly used for the ability to see into past, present, and future. Some awareness-spectrum narcotics allowed their users to become prescient, the spice melange being one such example among many in the Imperium. A number of individuals across the saga possessed prescience to varying degrees, but it was the Atreides line, from Paul Atreides to his son Leto II, that carried the power to its fullest expression.

The nature of prescience#

Prescience described the perception of events across time, and it could be opened by awareness-spectrum narcotics, of which the spice melange was the most significant in the Imperium. The talent appeared at many levels of intensity. Guild Navigators relied on a limited prescience to plot safe paths for Heighliners traveling through space. The Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam was regarded as possessing some degree of prescience, enhancing it with the Dune Tarot, and Alia Atreides, sister of Muad'Dib, held a limited form of the power as well.

The Atreides ascent#

Paul Atreides began having prescient dreams during his youth on Caladan. After his exposure to melange on Arrakis in 10191 AG his abilities were enhanced, and they became more pronounced still once he transformed the Water of Life. He could thereafter see events transpiring in the distant future. So complete was Paul's sight that when he later lost his eyes to a Tleilaxu stone burner, he could still move through the world without aid, navigating by the remembered detail of his vision and knowing in advance where everyone would stand and what they would say.

The full power of Atreides prescience came only with his son. Leto II saw, on reaching adulthood, the path by which mankind might survive across the eons. He foresaw the potential extinction of the human race and placed himself in a position to alter its evolution, charting the course called the Golden Path. Leto understood that humanity would answer his enforced peace by dispersing in the great migration known as the Scattering. Some fifteen centuries after his death, words he had left behind were recovered at Sietch Tabr by a Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother, including his prediction that the Bene Gesserit would one day ally with the Bene Tleilax.

Limitations of the sight#

For all its reach, prescience carried hard limits. Those who held true prescience could see their own deaths long before they arrived, and as a result such individuals were prone to despair and to a sense of having lost their humanity.

Prescient individuals were also blind to one another. Paul described how oracles were mutually invisible, unable to perceive each other through the future. This blindness explained why the conspiracy between the Bene Gesserit and the Spacing Guild was conducted in the presence of Edric, a prescient Guild Navigator, whose own sight masked the plotters from Paul's view. People who shared the aims of other prescient figures were likewise hidden. The single exception was the God-Emperor, who could see not only the future but other oracles as well.

Siona and the invisible bloodline#

Leto II deliberately bred generations of his line toward producing an individual who would be invisible to prescient sight. Siona Atreides was that individual. Though she was not herself prescient, she could not be seen by prescient viewers, and the same invisibility passed to those of her descendants who carried her genotype.
