Göndul
the most beautiful of the Valkyries
Göndul was a Valkyrie cursed by Odin to remain trapped in a corporeal form, driven toward madness until she was sealed away in Muspelheim. Freed by Kratos and Atreus and later restored by Freya, she fought among the Shield Maidens in the final assault on Asgard.
Göndul was one of the nine Valkyries of the Norse realms, renowned above all her sisters for her beauty. Like the others she fell under a curse laid upon them by Odin, which bound her spirit within a corporeal form and drew her steadily toward madness. Widely held to be the most powerful of the Valkyries save for their queen Sigrún, she was sealed away when she grew too dangerous, and only after Kratos and Atreus reached her was she set free.
Beauty and the curse#
In the old lore, Göndul was considered the most beautiful of all the Valkyries. She was known for her silver tongue and sharp wit, and her appearance was said to be so striking that it could drive men to madness, so much so that Odin forbade her from entering Midgard, for insanity was not a welcome trait in the halls of the gods. This account of her was passed on by Mimir. When Odin cursed the nine Valkyries to remain bound within corporeal bodies, the corruption festered in Göndul as it did in her sisters, twisting her toward the same madness that consumed them all.
Sealed in Muspelheim#
As her corruption deepened, Göndul became too dangerous to be left free, and the Valkyrie Queen sealed her away in the burning realm of Muspelheim. There she remained, a trapped and raging remnant of what she had once been, until Kratos and Atreus made their way into the realm and confronted her. The two engaged her corrupted form and brought it down, and with her body broken the curse upon her was undone at last. Freed, Göndul blessed the pair with her eternal gratitude, and her spirit vanished to be reunited with her sisters.
Restored for Ragnarök#
When the time came for the final reckoning, Freya used her Vanir magic to resurrect Göndul and the other freed Valkyries, restoring them to a pure physical form as Shield Maidens, their corrupted bodies giving way to organic wings once more. Grateful to be free of Odin's curse and having acknowledged Kratos as their general, Göndul took her place among her sisters in the final assault on Asgard during Ragnarök.
