Sigrun
the Valkyrie Queen
Sigrun was the Valkyrie Queen, the most powerful of the cursed Valkyries who fell to Odin's madness. Freed by Kratos and Atreus after a grueling battle, she was later restored as a Shield Maiden and fought against Asgard during Ragnarok.
Sigrun was the Valkyrie Queen, one of the nine Valkyries cursed into insanity by Odin. Her great power let her resist the curse longer than her sisters, but she too was eventually lost, until Kratos and Atreus defeated her physical form and freed her spirit. She later returned as a restored Shield Maiden and joined the assault on Asgard.
Princess of Fjoturlund#
Before becoming a Valkyrie, Sigrun was a princess in the Midgardian kingdom of Fjoturlund, born and raised by her father King Hogni and his queen. A king named Helgi sought her hand, but Hogni knew his true nature and refused. Taking the refusal as a slight, Helgi invaded Fjoturlund to claim Sigrun by force, and his soldiers sacked the kingdom and killed most of her family. Only her brother Prince Dagr survived. When Dagr avenged the family by impaling Helgi with his spear, Sigrun, who loved the mad king and did not yet know he had murdered her kin, placed a curse upon her brother. By the time she understood the truth, it was far too late.
Becoming the Valkyrie Queen#
Bitterly regretting the curse she had laid on her own brother, Sigrun joined the Valkyries to atone. She served under their queen, Freya, and revered her as her sisters did. During her tenure she fell in love with Mimir, Odin's advisor. After Freya's marriage to Odin ended and the All-Father severed her wings and banished her to Midgard, Sigrun was named the new Valkyrie Queen, though she felt she only ruled in the absence of the true queen. Without Freya, the Valkyries had no freedom, for Odin saw them as mere servants.
The curse and the imprisonment#
Displeased with the Valkyries, Odin cursed Sigrun and her sisters of the High Council to remain in physical forms that would corrupt them and drive them mad. Around the same time Mimir fell from favor and was imprisoned in an enchanted tree atop the tallest mountain in Midgard. To protect her sisters and the realms, Sigrun imprisoned each councilmember where they could do no harm, then locked herself away between the realms. Without the Valkyries to carry the worthy dead to Valhalla, the dead began to overwhelm Helheim.
The battle with Kratos#
As Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir battled the eight other Valkyries and pieced together what had befallen them, they reached the Throne of Eight and forced Sigrun to appear. The fight that followed proved one of the most difficult of their adventures, with Sigrun's might a true challenge even for the former Greek god of war. After a perilous struggle they defeated her and freed her spirit. She revealed Odin's role in the Valkyries' fate, thanked them, reunited briefly with Mimir, and departed to resume leading her sisters in their duty.
Restoration and the war on Asgard#
After being freed, Sigrun and her sisters defected from Odin and went into hiding in Vanaheim, where she helped Freya regain her Valkyrie wings. Freya later reincarnated Sigrun and her sisters in new physical forms that could not be corrupted again, making them Shield Maidens with organic, birdlike wings. Acknowledging Kratos as her General and Freya as the true Valkyrie Queen, Sigrun fought in the final battle, where she and her sisters severed the Einherjar's link to Valhalla so Odin's army could not revive itself. She survived into the aftermath of Ragnarok in Midgard.
After Ragnarok#
Some time later, learning that Kratos and Mimir had forced their way into Valhalla and suffered its penalty, Sigrun and her sisters confronted them and showed Kratos how to enter properly through the ritual of selection. When a failed run left the pair facing certain death, Sigrun broke Valhalla's rules to save them, burning her wings and weakening her connection to the hall in the process, though she said she did not regret it. After Kratos accepted Freya's offer to join her council, Sigrun revealed she was leaving the nine realms on a journey of self-discovery, promising Mimir she would return once it was complete.
Powers#
As Queen of the Valkyries, Sigrun was an immensely powerful warrior, the third most powerful of all the Valkyries, surpassed only by Freya and Gna. Kratos described her in his codex as the most lethal opponent he and Atreus had faced. Her strength and durability let her endure their assault for a long time, and her metallic wings doubled as slashing and projectile weapons. She could shoot fire and lava from the sky, hurl ice projectiles, generate smoke shockwaves, manipulate Bifrost energy to travel between realms, and lay foul curses, a power she had even before becoming a Valkyrie. As a Shield Maiden her wings became more organic but still granted her great mobility and flight.
