Battle of the Citadel
Sovereign's assault on the seat of galactic power
The Battle of the Citadel was the climactic engagement of 2183 in which the rogue Spectre Saren Arterius, guided by the Reaper Sovereign, attempted to seize the Citadel and open a path for the Reaper invasion. Commander Shepard and the Citadel and Alliance fleets stopped the attack at great cost, and its outcome shaped galactic politics for years afterward.
The Battle of the Citadel was the decisive confrontation of 2183 between the forces of the rogue Spectre Saren Arterius and the defenders of the Citadel, the political and economic heart of the galaxy. Saren, secretly serving the Reaper Sovereign, sought to seize control of the station and open the Citadel relay so that the rest of the Reapers could pour in from dark space. Commander Shepard, aboard the Normandy, pursued Saren through the Conduit on Ilos and confronted him as the Citadel and Systems Alliance fleets fought Sovereign in orbit.
Saren's path to the Citadel#
Saren Arterius had spent his life as one of the Council's most trusted Spectres before falling under Sovereign's influence. Convinced that organic life could only survive the coming Reapers by serving them, he gathered a geth army and searched for a way to bring the Reapers back into the galaxy. His efforts led him to the Prothean ruins on Ilos, which held the Conduit, a small mass relay linked directly to the Citadel.
Shepard, recently confirmed as the first human Spectre, tracked Saren across the galaxy but found the Citadel Council unwilling to believe warnings of a Reaper return. Rather than send a fleet to Ilos, the Council moved only to blockade the mass relays. Acting without sanction, Shepard took the Normandy to Ilos, where the surviving Prothean virtual intelligence Vigil explained Sovereign's plan: if the Reaper could direct an agent through the Conduit to seize the station's controls, it could open the Citadel relay and summon the rest of the Reapers. Vigil provided a data file that would grant temporary control of the Citadel. Shepard drove through the Conduit moments before it closed, emerging on the burning Presidium just behind Saren.
The fight for the station#
By the time Shepard arrived, Sovereign had begun its assault, escorted by a large geth fleet. Saren reached the central console in the Council Chambers, took control of the station, and sealed the ward arms, creating an impenetrable shell around Sovereign and the geth dropships already inside. With Citadel Control dead, the Council were forced to evacuate aboard the asari dreadnought Destiny Ascension under Matriarch Lidanya. Sovereign settled atop the Citadel Tower to wait for Saren to transfer full control.
Shepard and the squad fought across the Citadel's exhaust plains against geth troopers, krogan warriors, and heavy turrets, eventually descending through a maintenance hatch into the Council Chambers. There Saren confronted them, revealing that Sovereign had implanted him and made him partly synthetic. Depending on Shepard's approach, Saren was either cut down in the fight or talked into recognizing what he had become, after which he turned his weapon on himself. Either way he fell through the glass floor of the Chambers, apparently dead.
Sovereign destroyed#
Using the central console, Shepard uploaded Vigil's program and regained control of the station, then reached the Alliance fleet waiting at the relay. As the ward arms opened, Saren's body was reanimated by Sovereign, his flesh burning away until he became a husk wholly possessed by the Reaper. Shepard's squad destroyed the construct, and at that moment Sovereign weakened under the combined fire of the fleets. The Normandy led the final attack and delivered the blow that shattered the Reaper, which burned away to ashes. Debris from Sovereign crashed into the Tower, and Shepard, though buried in the rubble, emerged alive.
Aftermath and the branching outcome#
When Shepard regained control of the station, the Alliance Fifth Fleet stood ready at the relay, and the Commander faced a decision that branched the battle's consequences. Shepard could order the fleet to defend the Destiny Ascension and save the Council, or hold the fleet back and concentrate every ship on Sovereign while the Council ship was left to its fate.
In accounts where Shepard saved the Council, the surviving Council recognized humanity's sacrifice and offered the species a seat among the galaxy's leading powers, with Shepard nominating a human representative. In accounts where the Council was allowed to die, the Alliance established a new Council in its place, in some cases keeping the other species involved and in others forming a human-dominated body. Shepard's broader conduct, ranging across the moral spectrum that defined the Commander's career, further colored how these outcomes unfolded and how other species regarded humanity afterward. In every case Shepard left the Citadel aboard the Normandy, intent on finding a way to stop the Reaper invasion that Sovereign's defeat had only delayed.
