SSV Normandy SR-1

Prototype Stealth Frigate

The SSV Normandy SR-1 was a Systems Alliance prototype deep-scout frigate, the first of the Normandy class, co-developed with the Turian Hierarchy under Council sponsorship. She served as Commander Shepard's flagship until her destruction in a surprise attack in 2185.

The SSV Normandy SR-1, the Systems Alliance Space Vehicle Normandy Stealth Reconnaissance-1, was a prototype deep-scout frigate and the first ship of the Normandy class. She was co-developed by the Systems Alliance and the Turian Hierarchy under the sponsorship of the Citadel Council, and was optimized for solo reconnaissance deep within unstable regions using experimental stealth technology. After Captain David Anderson relinquished her, she became the base of operations for Commander Shepard during the hunt for Saren Arterius and the rogue Reaper Sovereign.

Origins and command#

The Normandy was commissioned in 2183 as the first of her class, a joint project between the Systems Alliance and the Turian Hierarchy carried out with Council backing. The collaboration was as much an experiment in cooperation as in engineering, and her turian design influences ran deep enough to shape even the layout of her command center. She was initially commanded by an Alliance officer named Elli Zander, but after Zander clashed with the turian chief engineer Octavio Tatum over the limits of the ship's drive core, Zander was removed and David Anderson placed in command.

Shortly afterward, the Normandy was handed over to Commander Shepard when the Commander became the first human Spectre. Anderson resigned his command to make this possible, and from that point the frigate served as Shepard's primary transport and base of operations. Although Shepard answered to the Council, the Normandy remained under Alliance jurisdiction, and her unique capabilities meant Admiral Steven Hackett often called on her for missions requiring discretion. She was named for the Battle of Normandy of 1944, a pivotal engagement of an old Earth war.

Stealth and drive systems#

The Normandy's most notable feature was her internal emission sink stealth system. Conventional wisdom had long held that starship stealth was impossible, because the heat generated by routine operations was easily detectable against the near absolute-zero background of space. The Normandy instead temporarily stored that heat in lithium heatsinks deep within her hull. The system had limits: it did not function during faster-than-light flight, which blue-shifted her emissions beyond what the sinks could absorb, and any direct visual scan would reveal her. In practice this mattered little, since most ships relied on scanners rather than line of sight. Running silent, she could remain undetected for roughly two to three hours, or drift passively through a system for days, before the stored heat had to be vented or it would build to levels capable of cooking the crew.

The stealth system was powered by an experimental component called the Tantalus drive core, proportionally about twice the size of any other ship's core. The Tantalus generated mass concentrations that the Normandy effectively "fell into," allowing her to move without heat-emitting thrusters. This made her exceptionally quiet and fast and let her sustain faster-than-light travel far longer before discharging. The core was staggeringly expensive, valued at 120 billion credits, equivalent to the drive cores of twelve thousand fighters. Like all frigates she also carried GARDIAN point-defense lasers, kinetic barriers, and a spinal mass accelerator cannon, and could mount Javelin dual disruptor torpedoes. The cockpit was fitted with an internal kinetic barrier to protect the pilot from vacuum should the command deck lose pressure.

Internal layout#

The Normandy was built on three main decks. The command deck held the bridge in the bow, the airlock, the Combat Information Center with its galaxy map, and the comm room toward the stern, which doubled as a briefing room and a secure link to the Council. The CIC was unusual in placing the commanding officer's station at the rear rather than in the middle of the room. Alliance ships favored a central position to ease communication with subordinates, but turian commanders preferred to look over their crews, and the engineers were curious how the arrangement would function within a human command structure.

The second deck was given over largely to living quarters, including the mess, crew sleeper pods, the captain's cabin, escape-pod hatches, and the medical bay overseen by Doctor Karin Chakwas. The lowest deck housed engineering and storage, including the bay where the M35 Mako was kept and the engineering section proper, where the drive core was maintained. Among the crew who served aboard were the helmsman Jeff "Joker" Moreau, navigator Charles Pressly, chief engineer Greg Adams, and the marines Kaidan Alenko and Ashley Williams.

The hunt for Saren#

During her shakedown run the Normandy launched from Arcturus and traveled to Eden Prime to covertly recover a Prothean Beacon unearthed there. A surprise geth attack complicated the mission, and the beacon was destroyed. The frigate then proceeded to the Citadel, where Anderson stepped down and Shepard took command.

When the trail led to Saren in the lawless Terminus Systems, the Normandy's stealth made her the only vessel that could carry Shepard there undetected. The Council refused to authorize the risk, and Ambassador Donnel Udina locked out her systems remotely, but with Anderson's help Shepard stole the ship and flew to Ilos. There the frigate delivered the ground team safely before withdrawing to rendezvous with the Fifth Fleet. During the subsequent Battle of the Citadel the Normandy led the assault against Sovereign and, once Shepard had brought down the Reaper's shields, distinguished herself with the speed and maneuverability that let her help destroy it.

Destruction over Alchera#

In 2185 the Normandy was patrolling the Omega Nebula near the planet Alchera when an unidentified vessel appeared and moved to intercept her despite her active stealth. Recognizing the threat, Joker began evasive maneuvers, but the attacker unleashed a barrage of beam weaponry that punched straight through the frigate's defenses. Her kinetic barriers and weapons were knocked out almost at once, and within seconds further hits breached her upper deck and destroyed a starboard engine nacelle.

The attack claimed more than twenty crew members, navigator Pressly among them. The order to abandon ship was given and the survivors evacuated by escape pod. Shepard stayed behind to save Joker, who was still trying to pilot the disintegrating ship, and managed to place him in the last pod as the attacker made a final pass that destroyed the Normandy completely. Shepard was thrown into space by the explosion and drifted into Alchera's orbit. The frigate's successor, built afterward in her image and nearly twice her size, was designated the Normandy SR-2 in her honor, and the crash site on Alchera was later marked with a memorial to those lost aboard.
