Ashley Williams
Systems Alliance Soldier
Ashley Williams was a human Systems Alliance soldier and the sole survivor of her unit on Eden Prime, who went on to serve aboard the Normandy under Commander Shepard and later rose to become one of the first human Spectres.
Ashley Madeline Williams was a human soldier of the Systems Alliance, serving as a Gunnery Chief in the 2nd Frontier Division stationed on Eden Prime. After the geth assault on that colony, she was assigned to the squad of Commander Shepard aboard the Normandy, where she fought through the hunt for the rogue Spectre Saren Arterius and the growing threat of the Reapers.
Background#
Ashley was born in 2158 on the colony world of Sirona, the eldest of four daughters in a family with deep military roots. Her great-grandmother, grandfather, and father had all sworn the Alliance Oath of Service. Following that tradition, she enlisted in the Alliance Navy as a marine after secondary school, training at facilities on Earth, in orbit, and on the Saturnian moon of Titan, where she earned a commendation for an aggressive assault exercise. Her instructors noted her endurance and her instincts for leadership, promoting her through the ranks of her training unit.
Despite strong performance reviews, Ashley's career stalled. Repeated requests for shipboard postings were denied without stated reason, leaving her cycling through groundside garrisons. The cause lay in her family name. Her grandfather had been the general who surrendered the garrison at Shanxi to the turians during the First Contact War, becoming the first human to capitulate to an alien power. The lingering prejudice against the Williams name dogged Ashley's advancement, and she came to believe that a Williams had to be better than the best simply to make up for Shanxi.
Eden Prime#
Ashley was serving with the 212 unit on Eden Prime when the colony came under attack by geth forces seeking a Prothean beacon. Her unit was wiped out in the assault, leaving her the sole survivor. She was rescued by Commander Shepard during the mission to retrieve that same beacon, having fought her way through the geth alone. Having proven herself capable under fire, she was transferred to the Normandy, taking the place of a fallen crewman. She found the transition difficult at first, blaming herself for not being more alert during the attack, but in time she grew accustomed to her new posting.
Service aboard the Normandy#
During the campaign against Saren, Ashley earned a reputation as a blunt, quick-tempered, and fiercely dedicated soldier. Her groundside history and her family's experience had left her distrustful of the other species of the galaxy and skeptical of the Citadel Council, though she was not without compassion, and she came to respect comrades regardless of their species. She held strong religious beliefs and a quiet love of poetry, particularly the works favored by her late father.
On the mission to Virmire, against Saren's cloning and indoctrination facility, two of Shepard's officers became trapped in positions from which both could not be saved. Shepard was forced to choose, and that decision determined which of the two survived. In some accounts Ashley lived and her fellow officer died; in others she was the one left behind, and was posthumously decorated by the salarian and turian governments. Should she have survived, she continued to serve Shepard and questioned the wisdom of facing the Reapers, but ultimately committed herself to the fight.
Horizon and the years after#
Following the destruction of the original Normandy and the apparent death of Shepard, Ashley, in accounts where she survived Virmire, remained with the Alliance and was promoted to Operations Chief. After human colonies began vanishing, she was dispatched to the colony of Horizon to upgrade its defenses against a feared Cerberus attack. Instead the colony was struck by the Collectors, and Ashley was paralyzed by a seeker swarm before being found in the aftermath. There she was reunited with Shepard, now resurrected and working with Cerberus. Glad as she was to find the Commander alive, she was deeply uneasy at the Cerberus association and parted on uncertain terms.
The Reaper War#
During the Reaper invasion, Ashley returned to assist in Shepard's evacuation from Earth and joined a mission to recover Prothean data on Mars, where she was critically injured by a Cerberus operative. She recovered at Huerta Memorial Hospital on the Citadel, having by then risen to Lieutenant Commander, and was offered Spectre status, which she accepted. When Cerberus and the corrupt ambassador Udina moved to seize control of the Council, Ashley was caught between her duty to protect the councillors and the truth of the conspiracy, bringing her briefly into armed confrontation with Shepard. Depending on the trust built between them, she could be talked down or might be killed in the standoff.
Should she have survived, Ashley could rejoin the Normandy crew or be assigned to support the wider war effort. In the final battle for Earth, her fate again rested on Shepard's choices and on whether enough of the galaxy's forces had been rallied. In the aftermath she might be seen mourning the fallen at the Normandy's memorial wall, or among the survivors who carried on. Where she did not survive an earlier turn of events, her name was instead added to that wall.
