Virmire
Site of Saren's Cloning Base
Virmire was a lush, tropical frontier world in the Terminus reaches where Saren Arterius built a secret research base, and where Commander Shepard learned the true purpose of the Reapers before destroying it.
Virmire was a lush frontier world of vast seas and humid tropical coasts, well suited to carbon-based life but left largely unsettled because of the political instability of the nearby Terminus Systems. It became infamous as the site of a hidden research base built by the rogue Spectre Saren Arterius, where in 2183 Commander Shepard confronted the truth about Sovereign and the Reapers before the facility was destroyed in a nuclear strike.
A frontier paradise#
Virmire's vast oceans and orbital position within its star's inner life zone gave it a wide equatorial band of warm, humid, tropical terrain, making it ideal for colonization by carbon-based species. Yet its proximity to the unstable Terminus Systems left it largely undeveloped, as the constant risk of raids by pirates and slavers made it an unappealing place to settle. Among its native lifeforms were creatures known as pod crabs.
Saren's base#
By 2183 the rogue Spectre Saren Arterius had built a concealed research base on Virmire. A salarian special tasks team under Captain Kirrahe was sent to investigate reports of his activity and sent a mission-critical transmission that was nearly lost in static. When Shepard answered the call, Kirrahe revealed that the base appeared to be a breeding facility for krogan, where Saren seemed to be raising an army by curing the genophage. Cut off from reinforcements, Kirrahe asked Shepard's help to destroy it.
The assault#
Kirrahe and Shepard devised a joint plan: the salarians would draw off the geth defenders while Shepard's strike team moved around the base to plant a nuclear device. If Urdnot Wrex had joined the crew, the prospect of destroying a possible cure for the genophage drove him to confront Shepard, and the outcome of that standoff depended on Shepard's choices. Pushing into the facility, the strike team discovered that its true purpose was not to breed krogan at all, but to study Sovereign's horrific indoctrination effect.
The truth about the Reapers#
In Saren's private laboratory the team found a second Prothean beacon, which gave Shepard another fragment of the warning vision, and were confronted by a hologram of Sovereign. Sovereign revealed itself to be not a starship built by the Protheans but an actual Reaper, and declared that the mass relays and the Citadel had been built by the Reapers themselves. The relays and the great station, it said, guided organic civilization along the path the machines desired so that it could be harvested at its height. Sovereign dismissed any attempt to stop the Reapers' return as futile before moving against Shepard's position.
The cost of the strike#
With the nuclear device armed across the facility, Shepard received word that Kirrahe's salarians were under heavy attack. Diverting to aid them left the bomb site exposed, and the geth closed in on it. Both crew members defending the device were soon in danger at once, with no time to save both, and Shepard was forced to choose between them. After the choice was made, Saren himself appeared and tried to win Shepard to his cause; Shepard refused, fought him off, and escaped aboard the Normandy as the device detonated and destroyed the base. The blast killed one of Shepard's own, with the identity of the fallen depending on the Commander's decision. The undamaged beacon left Shepard's vision complete, pointing the way to Ilos.
