Admiral Nagala: the last commander of the Colonial Fleet

Admiral Nagala was a flag officer of the Colonial Fleet and the officer who inherited command of the entire Colonial war effort in the hours after the Cylon surprise attack on the Twelve Colonies. With Colonial Fleet Headquarters on Picon destroyed in the opening bombardment, Nagala took personal command from the battlestar Atlantia and led a counterattack near Virgon. The battle that followed destroyed what remained of the Fleet as a fighting force, and Nagala was killed aboard the flagship. Word of Atlantia's loss reached Galactica, and Commander William Adama assumed command of what was left. (Battlestar Galactica (miniseries))

The rank and the headquarters#

Nagala is only ever called Admiral, so where the admiral sat on the scale of flag ranks is never made clear. The seat of the Fleet's command was Fleet Headquarters, also called Picon Fleet Headquarters, on Picon. By the day of the attack the Colonies had kept an armistice with the Cylons for some forty years. (Battlestar Galactica (miniseries))

That concentration made the headquarters an obvious target, and the Cylons treated it as one. When the Basestars arrived, Picon Fleet Headquarters was annihilated in the first minutes of the attack, taking the senior command of the Colonies with it. The first minutes of the Fall#

The attack that removed Nagala's superiors also removed most of the admiral's weapons. Before the Fall, the Command Navigation Program had been installed across Colonial military craft as a networked system. Its architect, Gaius Baltar, had given a Cylon infiltrator, Number Six, access to the defence mainframe, and the Cylons used backdoors in the program to shut down Colonial ships at will. Galactica was spared because Commander Adama had never allowed its computers to be networked, a lesson from the Cylon War. (Battlestar Galactica (miniseries))

The result was not a battle but a shutdown. Over Caprica, Colonial ships and Vipers were disabled almost as soon as they engaged, leaving the Basestars free to fire warheads at the population centres below. Similar strikes played out across the other worlds, and the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards over Scorpia were hit by nuclear weapons. At least thirty battlestars, which Kara Thrace reckoned was a quarter of the Fleet, were lost in the opening wave. Flag aboard Atlantia#

With the headquarters gone, Nagala took personal command of the Fleet and chose Atlantia as the flagship. The ship carried a long institutional memory. Galen Tyrol had served aboard her before his posting to Galactica, and William Adama had made his thousandth Viper landing on her and received his promotion to major there. Nagala's answer was a counterattack. On Galactica, Lieutenant Gaeta's plot of the system showed the admiral's ships moving to engage the Cylons near Virgon. Among the battlestars lost in that fight were Columbia, Triton and Solaria, a ship fitted with integrated command systems and Baltar's program. (Battlestar Galactica (miniseries))

The Battle of Virgon#

The gathered force met the Cylons near Virgon, and the battle didn't last long. The reason was the same one that had emptied the skies over the Colonies, and it was still unrecognised: nobody in the fleet yet knew the Command Navigation Program was the weapon being used against them. Atlantia fell prey to the backdoor like the rest and was reported destroyed over Virgon, along with Columbia, Triton, Solaria and others. Nagala was killed aboard Atlantia. Galactica could not have helped. In the middle of its decommissioning ceremony and due to become a museum, the old battlestar carried almost no ordnance, and its unnetworked computers were the reason it survived the day at all. It sat out the fighting near Virgon because it had nothing to fight with. (Battlestar Galactica (miniseries))

After Virgon#

When news of Atlantia's destruction reached Galactica, Commander Adama assumed command of the Fleet and transmitted a signal picked up by military and civilian ships alike: "To all Colonial units: Am taking command of fleet. All units ordered to rendezvous at Ragnar Anchorage for regroup and counter-attack. Acknowledge by same encryption protocol, Adama." It was an order built on the same instinct as Nagala's, to gather and strike back, and it was overtaken by the same reality. That silence settled the war. Adama concluded that the Fleet no longer existed, that Galactica's destruction was only a matter of time, and that the refugee convoy gathered by President Laura Roslin had to abandon the Cyrannus star system entirely.
