When the Shattering split the planet, he ended up on the fragment that became Bara MagnaBara MagnaA desert world of tribal warfare and scarce resources, one of three landmasses that formed Spherus Magna., where he settled with the rest of his tribe north of the Black Spike Mountains. During the BaterraBaterraMechanical shapeshifters built by the Great Beings to end the Core War by killing every armed combatant on Spherus Magna, and the failsafe that never shut them down. attacks, Atakus was the gate guard of a Skrall fortress in the northern mountains. He let in a supply wagon loaded with tree trunks for firewood, but the logs were disguised Baterra, which attacked and overran the fortress. But he is overconfident and weak against cunning opponents, and his arrogance makes him widely disliked. He idolises the elite Skrall warrior Stronius and spends much of his free time with him, hoping to pick up techniques, and Stronius tolerates him, sometimes letting him torture captive Vorox. Atakus also handled Agori who came to buy Skrall help. When an Agori sent by Raanu came to hire Skrall against the Bone Hunters, Atakus mocked his attempts to win the other villages' trust and told him the Skrall's loyalty was temporary and for sale. Greg Farshtey later said, outside the stories, that Atakus had been a secret agent of the Great Being who called himself Velika since before the Shattering, reporting to him for 100,000 years, and that Velika helped him get his glowing blades.
