Kurt Hansen: the Colonel Who Rules Dogtown in Phantom Liberty
Kurt Hansen is the former Militech colonel who runs Dogtown and its Barghest militia in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. Here's where he came from, what he wants from Songbird, and how he dies on every route.
Kurt Hansen is the colonel who rules Dogtown, the walled-off district of Pacifica where Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty takes place. He commands Barghest, the militia that grew out of his old Militech unit, and his double-dealing with Songbird is what brings the president of the New United States crashing down in his territory. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
Who Kurt Hansen was before Dogtown#
Hansen was a career Militech officer. The profile Phantom Liberty gives on him says he ran with a juvenile gang before enlisting, rose fast, made colonel young and spent years on covert operations around the world. In 2067 he took command of the Barghest urban combat unit. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
Much of the rest is hidden. His database entry says most of his military files were classified as top secret after the Unification War, readable only by Militech's top executives and certain members of Congress. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
How Hansen took Dogtown#
Hansen's unit led the way in Operation Midnight Storm, the NUSA's push into Night City at the end of the war. Barghest set up a forward base at the EBM Petrochem Stadium in Pacifica, ready for the main assault. Then Arasaka came to the city's defence, the attack was cancelled, and in June 2070 Hansen was ordered to withdraw. He and the entire unit refused. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
They kept the ground and the hardware. The database puts it bluntly: the government abandoned him at the war's end, and he built a homeland for himself out of that foothold, paid for by smuggling and arms deals on a global scale. The half-built resort district around the stadium became Dogtown. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
How people see him depends on who's asking. The same entry lists the views: a glorified gangster and war profiteer, a deserter and terrorist, or the leader of a force that keeps the NCPD and the corporations out and gave a home to people who had none. CD Projekt Red's pre-release dossier adds that his intellect, not his guns, is what makes him dangerous. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty; Kurt Hansen dossier)
Hansen's deal with Songbird#
Phantom Liberty's plot starts with a bargain Hansen struck in secret. His people had recovered a neural matrix from an abandoned Militech bunker. Songbird, the netrunner closest to President Rosalind Myers, needed it, so she offered him Myers in exchange. She told Hansen when and where Space Force One would be flying, and his men shot it down over Dogtown. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
Hansen never meant to play fair. He planned to kill Myers and capture Songbird for his own purposes. When V got Myers out of the wreck ahead of his troops, he still came away with Songbird, burned out and in his custody. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
He's sharp about intruders. At his gala in the Black Sapphire, he walks up to V at the roulette table, makes it clear he knows V is working for the NUSA, and has V and Solomon Reed thrown out. He also warns that if they interfere, he'll make Myers' dealings with the Blackwall public. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
How Kurt Hansen dies#
Hansen hires two French netrunners, the Cassel twins, to help Songbird work on the matrix. Reed's plan has V and Alex kill the twins and take their faces. At the stadium Hansen questions the "twins" closely, testing whether they are who they claim to be, then watches as Songbird takes V to the matrix. What happens next depends on V's choice in Firestarter:
- If V sides with Songbird, Alex, still disguised as one of the twins, catches Hansen by surprise and kills him while V and Songbird escape the stadium. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
- If V sides with Reed, Songbird warns Hansen, and he kills Alex on the spot. V then has to fight him on the way out. If V spares him, the Dogtown fixer Mr. Hands later reports that someone killed him in hospital; if V slips away without the fight, Hands says he caught a stray bullet. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
Either way, Hansen doesn't survive the night. In the fight he hits hard and fast, with a Sandevistan and heavy cyberware. The Phantom Liberty story page covers everything that happens after. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
Hansen before Phantom Liberty#
The idea of a strongman running part of Pacifica was in the base game first. A shard in Cyberpunk 2077 mentions a "general" leading a group in the Combat Zone, and the expansion built Hansen and Barghest around that hint. (Cyberpunk 2077)
CD Projekt Red introduced him properly ahead of the expansion's release with a dossier on its Phantom Liberty page, which describes him ruling Dogtown with an iron fist and holding the land he carved out during the war with his loyal Barghest soldiers. (Kurt Hansen dossier)
