The God of War TV Series: Cast, Story and What We Know
Prime Video's live-action God of War series has a two-season order, Ronald D. Moore as showrunner and, after a stunt injury forced a recast, Dave Bautista as Kratos. Here is what Amazon, Sony and the trade press have confirmed so far, and what nobody has announced yet.
The God of War TV series is a live-action adaptation of the PlayStation games for Amazon's Prime Video, made by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Ronald D. Moore is the showrunner, the show has a two-season order, and Kratos is now played by Dave Bautista after the original lead, Ryan Hurst, was injured on set. There is no release date yet. Is there a God of War TV show, and when is it coming out?#
Yes, it's real and in production, but there's no date. Amazon first greenlit the series in December 2022. Deadline's running explainer, updated in late August 2026, says plainly that a date has not been set for its release, and nothing announced since changes that. (God of War TV show explainer)
The show has also had a rough road. The first creative team, showrunner Rafe Judkins with Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, left in October 2024 after writing several scripts for season one. Ronald D. Moore, who made Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind, came in as showrunner shortly afterwards. Frederick E.O. Toye joined on 1 December 2025 to direct the first two episodes, and the two-season order came with his arrival. (Ryan Hurst cast as Kratos; God of War TV show explainer)
Filming began in Vancouver in February 2026, and Deadline ran the first image of Hurst's Kratos and Callum Vinson's Atreus on 27 February. (First look at Kratos and Atreus)
Why was Kratos recast?#
In late June 2026, four months into the shoot, Ryan Hurst tore a bicep while doing a stunt. He had surgery and production stopped. Deadline reported on 17 July that the studios had decided to recast the lead rather than wait, since a bicep tear that needs surgery can take up to a year to recover from fully and the role is so physical. Dave Bautista, best known as Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and a former WWE wrestler, was in talks by early August and closed his deal on 20 August 2026. Prime Video confirmed the casting. (Bautista closes Kratos deal; Bautista casting confirmed by Prime Video)
The recast means starting over. Deadline reported that none of the footage from the first shoot is being used, partly because a child actor plays Atreus and months of filming would no longer match. Prep began in August for a mid-October restart in Vancouver, with Toye back to direct the first two episodes again. On 3 September Bautista posted a training video saying he had two more months of work to get where he needed to be. Who is in the cast?#
These are the roles the trade press has reported and that Prime Video's partners have confirmed:
- Dave Bautista as Kratos, replacing Ryan Hurst, who voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök. (Bautista officially set as Kratos; Ryan Hurst cast as Kratos)
- Callum Vinson as Atreus, Kratos's ten-year-old son. (Bautista officially set as Kratos)
- Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur and Max Parker as Heimdall. (Bautista training for Kratos)
- Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor and Teresa Palmer as Sif. (Bautista training for Kratos)
- Alastair Duncan as Mimir. He voiced Mimir in both Norse games, the first actor from the games to join the show. (God of War TV show explainer)
- Jeff Gulka and Danny Woodburn as the dwarf brothers Sindri and Brok. (Bautista training for Kratos)
- Sonya Walger as Freya. (Bautista training for Kratos)
- Island Austin as Thrud, Ben Chapple as Magni, Louis Cunningham as Modi and Evelyn Miller as Gna. (Bautista training for Kratos)
What is the God of War show about?#
The show adapts the Norse games, not the Greek ones. Variety and The Hollywood Reporter both describe it as based on the two most recent games, God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, which introduced Atreus. (Bautista officially set as Kratos; Bautista casting confirmed by Prime Video)
The official logline has Kratos and Atreus setting out to scatter the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye, with Kratos trying to teach his son to be a better god and Atreus trying to teach his father to be a better human. That is the plot of God of War (2018), where Faye's last wish is for her ashes to be spread from the highest peak of the Nine Realms. (Bautista officially set as Kratos; God of War (2018))
The studios' character description of Kratos keeps his Greek past. It calls him a Spartan by birth and a god by nature, who rose to command armies until he made a deal with Ares, the Greek god of war, and lost his soul in exchange for victory. In the games, that past is the secret Kratos keeps from his son. (Ryan Hurst cast as Kratos; God of War (2018))
The cast list already reaches past the first game. Sif, Thrud, Heimdall and Gna don't appear until Ragnarök, so the show is drawing characters from both games from the start. (Bautista training for Kratos; God of War Ragnarök)
What hasn't been confirmed#
Plenty of what circulates about the show is guesswork. As of 9 October 2026, none of the following has been announced by Amazon, Sony or the trade outlets above:
- A release date, a release year or a trailer. (God of War TV show explainer)
- How many episodes each season has. (God of War TV show explainer)
- How the two seasons divide the story of the games, and whether season two covers Ragnarök. The reports say only that the show is based on both games. (Bautista casting confirmed by Prime Video)
- Who plays Angrboda, Tyr, Jormungandr or other characters not in the cast list above. (Bautista training for Kratos)
- Whether the original game cast beyond Alastair Duncan will appear. Christopher Judge, who voices Kratos in the games, has no announced role. (God of War (2018); God of War TV show explainer)
For the story the show is adapting, the God of War games in order and the guide to why Atreus is called Loki cover the Norse saga. (God of War (2018); God of War Ragnarök)
