Megaera
the Physical Fury
Megaera was one of the three Furies, the Physical Fury who tormented her victims with brute force and parasitic monsters. After Kratos severed her arm in an earlier clash, she tortured him in the Prison of the Damned, until his escape led to her death and the recovery of the Amulet of Uroborus.
Megaera was one of the three Furies who pursued Kratos for breaking his bond with Ares, and the sister of Alecto and Tisiphone. Known as the Physical Fury and titled the Goddess of Envy, she was the most brutal of the three, tormenting her victims with raw force rather than the illusions favored by her sisters. She met her end in the Prison of the Damned at the hands of the Spartan she had spent two weeks torturing.
The Physical Fury#
Megaera was the most brutal of the Furies, described as one who knew only physical pain. Where her sisters tormented the mind and the soul, she punished the flesh, torturing the prisoners of the Prison of the Damned at length. She looked upon mortals with contempt, arrogant and authoritarian, and her overconfidence in her own strength would ultimately undo her. From holes in her chest she could secrete parasitic arthropods that grew to half the size of a man, and she could command them to infest both the living and the dead, fusing with their hosts to make them stronger and more insectoid. Four spider-like limbs grew from her back, granting her speed, agility, and the ability to crawl across walls and ceilings.
The hunt and the severed arm#
Megaera joined her sisters in pursuing Kratos after he broke his blood oath with Ares. During the Spartan's journey to Delos, she and Tisiphone trapped him in an illusion of Sparta upon the Statue of Apollo. Megaera stood against Kratos well, causing powerful shockwaves with her blows, but after a long and brutal fight he tore the arm from her body. The injury left her with a grudge against Kratos far deeper than that of her sisters. The Furies later captured Kratos and held him to be tortured within the Prison of the Damned, the living body of the Hecatonchires Aegaeon.
Death in the Prison of the Damned#
After roughly two weeks of torture, the one-armed Megaera roused the chained Kratos and beat him savagely, but one of her strikes broke the bond around his neck and freed him. The two fought, and when she accidentally shattered the chain holding his other arm, Kratos slashed her abdomen and charged her off the ledge. Injured, Megaera fled, taunting the Spartan and summoning parasites to mutate caged prisoners and the arm of Aegaeon into monsters to slow his pursuit.
The chase carried them through the prison until Megaera infected the head of Aegaeon himself, forcing Kratos into a battle against the mutated giant. Reaching her perch upon Aegaeon's eye, Kratos impaled her stomach, stabbed her in the chest, and threw her from the Hecatonchires. He dove after her, and as the pair smashed against a lower platform he drove both Blades of Chaos into her chest, killing her instantly. From her corpse he recovered the Amulet of Uroborus, which allowed him to continue his journey. Megaera was the first of the Furies to die and, in the recorded history of Kratos, the first deity he slew.
