Why Is Kratos White? The Ashes on His Skin Explained
Kratos is white because his skin is covered in the ashes of his wife and daughter. A village oracle bound them to him after he killed his family, and they never came off. Here is the curse, the name it gave him and why he is still pale in the Norse games.
Kratos is white because he is covered in the ashes of his dead wife and daughter. After he killed Lysandra and Calliope in a temple, tricked into it by Ares, the village oracle cursed him so that their ashes would cling to his skin forever. They never came off, and that pale colour is where his name the Ghost of Sparta comes from. (God of War (2005))
The curse of the village oracle#
The story comes out in flashbacks in the first game. Kratos was a Spartan captain who had sworn himself to Ares, the God of War, in exchange for victory over a barbarian army. Serving the god, he led a raid on a village of Athena's followers and killed everyone in its temple. Two of the dead were his own wife and daughter. Ares had moved them there from Sparta without telling him. The full story is in why Kratos killed his family. (God of War (2005))
The village burned, and an old oracle who lived there cursed him for what he had done. The ashes of Lysandra and Calliope were fixed to his skin from that day on, so that the mark of his crime would be plain to anyone who looked at him. (God of War (2005))
It's a cruel curse because it's a reminder he can't take off. Every time Kratos looks at his own hands, he sees what is left of his family. (God of War (2005))
The Ghost of Sparta#
The ash turned Kratos a ghostly white, and people began calling him the Ghost of Sparta. The name stuck so firmly that the series uses it as his title and gave it to a whole game, Ghost of Sparta. (God of War (2005); God of War: Ghost of Sparta)
Ghost of Sparta adds a twist. The god of death, Thanatos, tells Kratos that he was the marked warrior an old prophecy said would bring down Olympus. The gods had taken his brother Deimos instead, because of a birthmark, and got the wrong brother. Read that way, the ash is one more mark on a man the gods had already marked. (God of War: Ghost of Sparta)
What about the red tattoo?#
The red stripe that runs over his head, face and body is a different thing. It copies the birthmark of Deimos, whom Ares and Athena took from Sparta when the brothers were boys. Kratos wears it in his brother's memory. So the white is his family's ash, and the red is for the brother he couldn't save. (God of War: Ghost of Sparta)
Is Kratos still white in the Norse games?#
Yes. God of War (2018) picks him up many years later in Midgard, older and bearded, and his skin is still the same ashen grey. The curse didn't fade with time or distance. (God of War (2018))
The colour matters in the Norse story too. Kratos keeps his past hidden from his son Atreus for most of the 2018 game, but the ash is a piece of that past he can't hide. In the Valhalla epilogue to Ragnarök, Kratos comes face to face with a vision of his younger self, the pale, furious Ghost of Sparta on the throne of the God of War, and finally makes peace with him. (God of War (2018); God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla)
There's an odd echo in the 2018 game, too. Its whole plot is about carrying the ashes of his second wife, Faye, to the highest peak in the Nine Realms. The first time he carried a wife's ashes, they were cursed onto him. This time he scatters them by choice, with his son beside him. That parallel is our reading rather than something the game states. (God of War (2018))

Ares and Athena seized Deimos as a boy because his birthmark matched the prophecy of the Marked Warrior. Thanatos crushed him at Suicide Bluffs.

Kratos
Kratos was the demigod son of Zeus who rose from a Spartan general to the Greek God of War, destroyed the pantheon of Olympus in a quest for vengeance, and then began again in the Norse realms as a father seeking to leave his bloody past behind.

Lysandra
Lysandra was a Spartan woman, the first wife of Kratos and mother of his daughter Calliope. Unafraid of his savagery and the voice of reason against it, she was slain by Kratos' own hand during a blood frenzy engineered by Ares.
