Wyvern: the winged predators the Vanir once rode

The Wyverns were winged predators of the Norse skies, fearsome creatures that blended the feathers of a bird of prey with the scales of a serpent. Smaller and far more agile than true dragons such as Nidhogg, they hunted the air above Vanaheim and Asgard with speed, precision, and cruelty. Yet their story was not one of wild savagery alone. Before Odin's forces occupied the Vanir homeland, the Wyverns had been mounts, bonded to riders of the Vanir through patience and trust, and it was only under the whips of the Einherjar that they became slaves of war.

A shape between bird and serpent#

The Wyvern carried a lean, sinewy frame built for speed and aerial maneuvering rather than brute force. Its body ran long and serpentine, borne on powerful hind legs that ended in clawed talons capable of seizing prey or enemies outright. It had no forelegs at all. In their place spread great wings edged with feathers and spines, which draped along the creature's sides like a cloak when folded and, when opened, revealed layered membranes reinforced by jagged ridges. The silhouette they cut in flight belonged to neither dragon nor bird alone but to some marriage of the two.

The head was narrow and angular, sharp in every line. A beak like mouth lined with jagged teeth joined the hooked menace of a raptor's bill to the savage bite of a lizard, and horns and spiny crests crowned the skull and jaw. The eyes burned with a fierce, almost elemental light, bright, animalistic, and unblinking, their color often hinting at the energy the beast carried within. Behind the body trailed a long, whip like tail tipped with bony spurs or bladed extensions, a rudder in flight and a weapon on the wing.

Their scales shimmered in earthy and metallic tones, bronze, emerald, and deep gray, set off by feather like ridges along the neck, wings, and tail. The mingling of reptilian scale and feathered detail gave the Wyvern a primal yet otherworldly look, well suited to the mythic wilds of the Nine Realms. Beside the hulking beasts of the bestiary the Wyvern read as majestic and draconic, a predator of elegance that swooped upon its foes with precision and cruelty, and from its beaked mouth it could loose bolts of lightning.

No kin to dragons#

For all its draconic bearing, the Wyvern was not a dragon. Mimir, who catalogued the beasts of the worlds, was firm on the point. Unlike drakes and dreki, the Wyvern belonged to no branch of the dragon family, and the surest mark of the difference was its lack of forelegs. Whatever the creature surrendered in limbs it reclaimed in the dexterity and speed of its wings. Mimir judged the sight of one taking flight to be as effortless as a fish gliding through the waters of a calm lake, and he called the beast as majestic as it was dangerous. Where the great dragons overwhelmed by bulk, the Wyvern won its kills through agility and ferocity.

Mounts of the Vanir#

In the years before Asgard's armies came to Vanaheim, the Wyverns were tamed by the Vanir, though Mimir held the word tamed to be a generous description of the arrangement. Riders and mounts developed close bonds, and the partnership demanded a significant measure of trust from either party before a Wyvern would suffer a rider at all. By the accounts that reached Mimir, the trouble was well worth it, and the bonded riders of Vanaheim became a memory Vanaheim's defenders carried with pride long after the practice was broken.

Chains of the Einherjar#

That older bond was destroyed by conquest. When Freya's marriage to Odin opened Vanaheim to the Aesir and the Einherjar established a military occupation of the Vanir homeland, Asgard's soldiers chose to enslave all the Wyverns they could seize. Only a few escaped into the wilds. The Einherjar saw what the Vanir riders had achieved and set out to copy it, but where the Vanir had built the partnership on trust, Asgard built it on the whip.

Among the occupying forces served Einherjar beast tamers who carried whips rarely used in open battle, tools kept instead for taming and controlling the beasts of Asgard, such as the Gradungr. These tamers held the power to call Wyverns to their aid in combat, and other Einherjar learned the same summoning art, so that the sky beasts of Vanaheim were turned against the very homeland that had raised them. Enslaved Wyverns thereafter ranged both Vanaheim and Asgard, fixtures of the occupation and of the Aesir capital alike.

The Dodher Wyvern#

Odin did not stop at enslavement. Among the beasts of Asgard there arose a breed called the Dodher Wyvern, counted among the deadliest of Asgardian battle beasts, a Wyvern imbued with the power of the Bifrost. Mimir recorded the creation with open contempt. Nobody, in his telling, had asked for a dragon like beast with Bifrost abilities, yet Odin had seen fit to grant the gift anyway, and Mimir could only guess at what experiments the All Father had performed on the poor creatures to saturate them with an energy as foreign to their nature as bathing in lava. The Dodher Wyvern haunted the fields of Asgard through the last days of the Aesir, sharing Asgard's bestiary with cursed beasts and the Einherjar themselves.

Wyverns in the last war#

The Wyverns' speed made them the occupation's surest pursuers, and it was in that role that they entered the histories of the war against Odin. When Kratos seized Heimdall's horn Gjallarhorn and the rebels fled Asgard aboard Skidbladnir, the flying boat of Freyr, a pair of Wyverns set upon the escaping company, too swift for any ranged weapon to bring down. The Midgardian warrior Birgir answered them alone. He turned aside a blast with his great sword, spoke a verse of the Havamal, and hurled himself from the side of the boat over Freyr's protest, driving his blade into one Wyvern and steering the dying beast into the second, so that all three plunged together far below the clouds. His companions mourned him for dead, though Birgir himself survived the fall.

Even beyond the living worlds the beasts endured. In Valhalla, where the shores reshaped themselves after the lands Kratos had known, Wyverns were among the creatures that met him in the sanctuary shaped after Midgard, sharing those trial grounds with Einherjar, Light Elves, and raiders. From the jungles of Vanaheim to the fields of Asgard and the shifting halls of the honored dead, the Wyvern remained what it had always been, a hunter of the air that owed its chains, and its cruelest gifts, to Odin.
