Architect: Colossal Remnant Sentinel of Heleus
Architects were colossal Remnant machines that haunted the golden worlds of the Heleus Cluster, bursting from the ground to hover on element zero cores and raining destruction on anything beneath them. Pathfinder Ryder of the Andromeda Initiative first encountered them in 2819 and learned that, while they could not be destroyed, they could be grounded and reprogrammed.
Architects were massive, mechanical Remnant constructs that inhabited the golden worlds of the Heleus Cluster. A rare and awe inspiring sight, each one burst from the ground without warning, riding multiple element zero cores that let it hover far above the terrain and attack from the air. Pathfinder Ryder of the Andromeda Initiative first encountered these machines in 2819, and in the years that followed confirmed their presence on Eos, Voeld, Kadara, and Elaaden, where their appearances threatened the fragile outposts the Initiative had planted across the cluster.
Form and function#
An Architect was among the largest mobile machines ever recorded in the Heleus Cluster. It dwarfed buildings and ground vehicles alike, and among known Remnant constructs only the worm like Abyssal that roamed the deserts of Elaaden exceeded it in sheer scale. The machine's body was held aloft by multiple element zero cores, allowing a construct of impossible tonnage to hover, reposition, and strike from above at will. Its armor proved impenetrable to every category of small arms brought against it, including mass accelerator rounds, the standard of both Milky Way and local arsenals.
The only apparent vulnerabilities on an Architect's frame were the power cores set into its body, and even these were far from a lasting weakness. Given enough time, damaged cores showed clear signs of self repair, knitting themselves back toward function. This resilience meant that no force in the cluster ever managed to destroy an Architect. The most that could be achieved was to disable its cores in succession, grounding the machine long enough for someone to reach its central processor. Interfacing with that processor allowed its current directives to be rewritten, compelling the Architect to break off and withdraw rather than fight on.
Armament and escorts#
Every Architect carried multiple defensive systems, each of them extremely dangerous in its own right. A rapid firing energy cannon mounted about its head could shred any target caught in the open. The machine could also saturate a small area with around a dozen timed explosives at once, denying whole stretches of ground to attackers. Its most devastating weapon was an electrically charged energy burst that swarmed with fluidly replenishing shrapnel, a projected storm that first overcharged kinetic barriers and then tore apart whatever they had been protecting. In some engagements this detonation left behind a lingering electrical field, and when an Architect anchored itself in place it could raise a sustained electrical dome between its leg conduits, punishing anyone who closed the distance.
An Architect never fought alone for long. Ferrofluid reservoirs and minifacturing peripherals within its body allowed it to fabricate smaller Remnant units on the spot, spilling out fresh machines to swarm its enemies even as its own weapons cycled. Between its impenetrable armor, its layered weaponry, and its capacity to manufacture reinforcements from its own substance, an Architect functioned less like a single war machine and more like a mobile, self sustaining army.
The name that came before the sighting#
The name "Architect" preceded the first confirmed sighting of one. Peebee, the asari Remnant researcher who attached herself to Ryder's crew, claimed she had theorized the existence of a class of Remnant responsible for excavating the vast spaces needed for the vaults and for building other Remnant infrastructure across the cluster. When the machines finally revealed themselves, their sheer size alone appeared to fit that profile. The theory cast the Architects not as weapons first but as builders, engines of construction whose destructive power was incidental to their original purpose, though nothing about their behavior toward settlers suggested they drew the distinction themselves.
Encounters across the golden worlds#
The first Architect revealed itself on Eos. Hainly Abrams asked Ryder to deploy three seismic hammers to monitor unusual seismic activity near the outpost at Prodromos, tremors that had been troubling the settlement. When the third hammer was placed, the source of the anomaly erupted from the ground: an Architect, which immediately attacked the Pathfinder. Once it was beaten down and interfaced with, the machine retreated into orbit above Eos and held there in standby, monitoring the planet's atmosphere.
On Voeld, Priya Blake, mayor of the Taerve Uni outpost, asked the Pathfinder to search for a missing Initiative science team. Ryder found the team's shuttle destroyed and all of its occupants dead. The culprit proved to be an Architect, which fell upon Ryder at an abandoned kett base. Defeated and reprogrammed, it too withdrew into orbit and went dormant.
On Kadara, the search for a cultist named Bishop led Ryder into Kurinth's Valley. The team found only Bishop's corpse before an Architect attacked. After it was subdued and interfaced with, the machine retreated to orbit, where it appeared to continue monitoring Kadara's groundwater from standby.
On Elaaden, Kariste Archana reported an Architect prowling near the settlements, and warned that it might attack any colonists it came across. Ryder tracked the machine to a Remnant ruin in the planet's Languish region and brought it down. Like the others, it rose to Elaaden's orbit once reprogrammed and remained there in standby mode.
The Architect at Meridian#
The final recorded Architect fought under another's command. During the battle for Meridian, the kett Archon plugged himself into the Remnant vault network and summoned a multitude of Remnant machines against Ryder, an Architect among them, declaring that anyone who resisted him deserved no mercy. The construct harassed the Pathfinder's squad throughout the fight while Ryder's twin worked through their shared connection to sever the Archon's hold on the network. Unlike its counterparts on the golden worlds, this Architect was never brought down, though concentrated fire against the conduit housed in its head could silence its harassing fire for a time.
Dormant watchers in orbit#
Every Architect that Ryder defeated survived the encounter. Reprogrammed rather than destroyed, they ascended to the orbits of Eos, Voeld, Kadara, and Elaaden and held there in standby, silent shapes hanging above the worlds they had once terrorized. Some appeared to carry on quiet work even in dormancy, one monitoring an atmosphere, another a water table, behavior consistent with Peebee's theory that they had been made as custodians of Remnant infrastructure rather than as weapons. On the ground, the settlers they had menaced adjusted to their absence. At Prodromos the seismic rumblings that had plagued the outpost subsided once its Architect was dealt with, and colonists began to think about how to work their worlds without waking anything else that slept beneath the sand.

Elaaden: Desert Moon of the Heleus Cluster
Elaaden was a scorching, tidally locked desert moon in the Heleus Cluster of the Andromeda galaxy. Brutally hot and starved of water, it nonetheless became home to the krogan colony of New Tuchanka and to scavengers and exiles living on its sands.

Element zero
Element zero, nicknamed eezo, was a rare material that released dark energy when subjected to an electrical current, letting it raise or lower the mass of everything in the resulting field. It underpinned faster-than-light travel, artificial gravity, and the biotic abilities of living beings.

Eos: Desert World of Radiation Storms
Eos was a resource-rich desert world in the Heleus Cluster, long catalogued as unsettleable because of the lethal radiation storms that scoured its surface. After two colonies failed, the reactivation of its Remnant vault drove back the radiation and allowed the Andromeda Initiative's first lasting outpost to take root there.

Heleus Cluster: The Initiative's New Frontier
The Heleus Cluster was a resource-rich region of star systems on the outskirts of the Andromeda galaxy, chosen by the Andromeda Initiative as its foothold in the new galaxy. Centered on a massive black hole and seeded with abundant Element Zero, it held the worlds the Initiative hoped to settle.

Kadara: Haven of Exiles and Pirates
Kadara was a mountainous world in the Heleus Cluster, first settled by the angara and later overrun by exiles and pirates who fled the Nexus. Its waters ran toxic with sulphides until a Remnant vault was reactivated, after which the Andromeda Initiative was able to plant an outpost there.

Kett: Conquerors of Heleus
The kett were a hostile, militaristic species encountered by the Andromeda Initiative in the Heleus Cluster. Unable to breed by natural means, they expanded their ranks and their empire through exaltation, a process that converted captured members of other species into obedient kett.
