Asari-Founded Mercenary Corporation

Eclipse was a mercenary corporation founded by the asari commando Jona Sederis, prized for cutting-edge equipment, heavy use of biotics, and a willingness to take any contract a client could afford. It blended security work with a vast smuggling operation and counted among the three rival syndicates that ruled Omega's underworld.

By Joe Garratt

Eclipse was a mercenary corporation founded by the asari commando Jona Sederis, providing effective security and firepower to any employer who could afford it, with few scruples about who that employer was. Its mercenaries worked in teams of troopers and vanguards led by more experienced commando units, favoring stealth, cutting-edge weaponry, and the extensive use of biotics. Alongside legitimate contracts Eclipse ran a sprawling smuggling business, and on Omega it stood as one of three rival syndicates that drew the attention of Commander Shepard.

Founding and methods#

Eclipse was founded by the asari commando Jona Sederis as a corporation that sold effective security and firepower to whoever could afford it. The company favored stealth, discretion, and what it considered intelligent ways of conducting battles. It was not as disciplined as its more established rival the Blue Suns, but it made up for that with cutting-edge equipment and the extensive use of biotics. Eclipse mercenaries worked in teams of troopers and vanguards led by more experienced commandos, and the corporation drew most of its members from asari, salarians, and humans, supplemented by YMIR, FENRIS, and LOKI mechs.

Eclipse was as much a criminal enterprise as a security firm. It ran extensive smuggling ventures, controlling nearly twenty percent of all smuggling on Omega and specializing in moving illicit goods and criminals from place to place. On the world of Illium, prospective operatives were rumored to be required to commit a murder before they could earn their uniform.

Omega and the siege of Archangel#

In 2185 the Eclipse commander on Omega, Jaroth, sought revenge on the turian vigilante Archangel, who had killed his brother and disrupted his operations. Archangel's relentless harassment of all three Omega syndicates drove Eclipse, the Blood Pack, and the Blue Suns into an unprecedented temporary alliance to end the vigilante once and for all. The conspiracy ran deeper than vengeance: the three gangs also planned to overthrow Aria T'Loak once Archangel was dead, and Jaroth had drawn the Blood Pack into the scheme and messaged the Blue Suns leader Tarak about it.

Commander Shepard thwarted the operation by helping Archangel, who proved to be Garrus Vakarian, defeat all three organizations. Jaroth, his mechs, and his men did not survive the encounter. If Shepard recovered the datapad bearing the conspiracy and brought it to Aria, part of her reprisal was rewarding the Commander with the coordinates of an Eclipse smuggling depot on Daratar, guarded by YMIR mechs set to destroy its contents rather than let them be captured.

Contracts across the galaxy#

Eclipse turned up wherever wealthy clients needed protection. On Illium, Nassana Dantius hired Eclipse mercenaries to shield her from the drell assassin Thane Krios, forcing Shepard to fight through their ranks. While recruiting the justicar Samara, Shepard had to pry the name of a ship out of an elite Eclipse cell known as the Sisterhood, which recruited young asari and demanded a murder as initiation, the same trail that led toward Samara's quarry Morinth. Eclipse troops under Captain Enyala were also hired to intercept the sister of a Cerberus officer.

On Bekenstein, Eclipse provided security for the criminal Donovan Hock under Chief Roe, some of the guards wearing an alternate black-and-white color scheme to mark themselves apart. On Lorek the corporation captured an operative to decrypt data possibly concerning Cerberus experiments, and on Helyme an Eclipse team under Captain Vorleon seized an energy refinery in search of a ship's valuable cargo. In each case, Shepard's intervention left the mercenaries dead.

The Reaper War#

During the Reaper War, Aria T'Loak worked to unite Eclipse, the Blood Pack, and the Blue Suns under her leadership, as the gangs had run amok away from Omega. She bargained that Shepard would have the mercenaries' support against the Reapers in exchange for helping her seize control. Shepard could assist by persuading Commander Bailey to release the imprisoned founder Jona Sederis, or by persuading her second Sayn to take command of Eclipse, with the payoff described as a great many mechs and elite troopers for stealth operations.
