The Great Sundial

The Great Sundial of Onu-Wahi was a large organic disk buried beneath the Great Mine of Onu-Koro that opened a passage into Mangaia and later, in shrunken form, guided Takanuva to the Codrex during the Battle of Karda Nui.

The Sundial responded. The disk opened, revealing a small staircase that led down through the rock layer into a crystalline chamber. The chamber contained a hovering holographic gold Hau on a pedestal at its centre, and nothing else.

The image of the gold Hau lay at the intersection of in-universe events and the BIONICLE: Search for the Gold Mask contest that ran on BIONICLE.com in 2001. The hologram itself bore the word RAHI above it, a marker the contest's external organisers used as part of the puzzle structure rather than an in-universe inscription.

Frequently asked questions

What was the Great Sundial?
The Great Sundial of Onu-Wahi was a large organic disk buried beneath the Great Mine of Onu-Koro on Mata Nui. Its face carried eighteen sections representing the thirty-six hour day of Spherus Magna, and it operated through a fitted gnomon and applied light from a lightstone.
How did Takua open the Great Sundial?
The Ga-Koro astrologer Nixie gave Takua a gnomon she believed was the disk's missing centre piece and explained that the gnomon's shadow had to fall on the four o'clock mark. Takua fitted the gnomon into the disk's centre and shone his lightstone on it until the shadow touched the four o'clock position, and the Sundial opened to reveal a staircase down into a crystalline chamber.
Where did the passage beneath the Great Sundial lead?
After the Battle of Kini-Nui, a new passageway opened in the chamber below the Sundial, and the Onu-Matoran miners correctly concluded it led into Teridax's lair. The route was the second of the two known entrances to the Mangaia, bypassing the condition that the Kini-Nui entrance required all the golden Kanohi to be collected first.
How did the Great Sundial end up being used in Karda Nui?
A strange voice instructed Lewa Nuva to retrieve the Sundial from the Onu-Koro mines and store it in the Archives, and it was later shrunken to portable size. Toa Krakua delivered the shrunken artifact to Takanuva, who used it during the Battle of Karda Nui as a directional locator.
How did the shrunken Sundial help Takanuva find the Codrex?
When Takanuva placed the shrunken Sundial on the ground and shot a beam of light at it, the shadow cast by its gnomon pointed toward the Codrex at the centre of Karda Nui. The mechanism reused the same shadow-casting principle that had originally opened the Mangaia passage, repurposed as a compass rather than a key.
