The Lhikan: Vahki Transport of the Toa Metru

The vehicle fell into the water.

The LhikanLhikanToa of Fire, leader of the Toa Mangai, and the last Toa of Metru Nui, who surrendered his Toa Power to create the Toa Metru and died defending Vakama. had not been built to operate on the sea. The Vahki TransportThe Vahki TransportThe multi-legged cargo vehicle built by the Vahki of Metru Nui and used by the Toa Metru to escape the city across the Silver Sea after the Great Cataclysm. design was a multi-legged surface vehicle with no native buoyancy and would, by the standard reading of its specifications, have sunk on contact with the surface of the protodermis sea. The six Matoran SpheresMatoran SpheresThe silver hibernation pods used by Teridax, posing as Turaga Dume, to capture, store, and transport the entire Matoran population of Metru Nui during the Great Cataclysm. attached to the sides prevented that outcome. The sealed sphere capsules provided enough displacement to keep the cargo platform afloat on the protodermis, and the vehicle rode the water rather than sinking through it. The flotation solution was an improvisation that the placement of the spheres at the loading at the ColiseumThe ColiseumCentral tower of Metru Nui, serving as government seat, sporting arena, and, during Teridax's masquerade, a prison for the city's Matoran population. had, by accident or by foresight, made possible.

The Lhikan suffered some damage during the crossing. Parts of the vehicle melted after a left turn, the recorded specifics of which placed the damage in the working components of the transport rather than in the flotation arrangement. Arrival at Mata Nui and the rebuild#

Significance#

The Lhikan's significance to the broader narrative was the use to which it had been put rather than the vehicle's own properties. As a Vahki TransportThe Vahki TransportThe multi-legged cargo vehicle built by the Vahki of Metru Nui and used by the Toa Metru to escape the city across the Silver Sea after the Great Cataclysm., it had been unremarkable, one of many produced in the VahkiVahkiMetru Nui's mechanical law enforcement squads, designed to maintain rigid order but ultimately undermined by chaos beyond their programming. workshops of Metru NuiMetru NuiThe city beneath Mata Nui functions as the Great Spirit's brain, housing the Matoran whose labor keeps the god alive. for ordinary cargo and detention duties. The choice of name placed the vessel at the symbolic centre of that responsibility. Frequently asked questions

What is the Lhikan?
The Lhikan was a Vahki Transport that the Toa Metru named in honour of the fallen Toa Lhikan. It was the converted cargo platform on which the team carried six Matoran sealed in Matoran Spheres out of the broken city of Metru Nui, across the Silver Sea, to the surface island later named Mata Nui.
How did the Toa Metru find the Lhikan?
The team found the vehicle in an underground room during a Vahki pursuit. They were being chased by Vahki and needed transport off the streets, so they activated the vehicle, used it to escape on the surface, and turned it toward the Coliseum at the centre of the city.
How did the Lhikan stay afloat on the Silver Sea?
The Vahki Transport had no native buoyancy and would have sunk on contact with the protodermis sea. The six Matoran Spheres attached to its sides, three on each side, provided enough displacement to keep the cargo platform afloat. The flotation was an improvisation made possible by how the spheres had been loaded back at the Coliseum.
What happened during the encounter with Mavrah?
Mavrah, a rogue Archivist living in a subterranean waterway with sea Rahi and prototype Vahki called Kralhi, assumed the Toa had been sent to drag him back and ordered the Kralhi to capture them. The attempt to mediate collapsed into a feeding frenzy when the Rahi were ordered to attack, and a massive wave knocked the sphere containing Ahkmou off the raft and swept Mavrah away to his presumed death.
What happened to the Lhikan after it reached Mata Nui?
By the time it reached the surface island, very little of the original vehicle was left after the melting damage, the combat with Teridax, the Mavrah encounter, and the strain of a crossing it had not been built for. The Toa Metru built the Lhikan II from its salvage, surface supplies, and branches of the Karzahni plant for the return voyage, and the original ceased to exist as a distinct vessel.
